How much has your energy bill increased!?

Magik01 · 02/03/2022 14:09

Had an email off British Gas yesterday saying that my gas bill will be increasing by £534 a year and my electricity by £370, so a total of £904 per year. That’s all estimates of course based on our usage now, but how are people going to afford this?!

Currently on maternity leave so in the house a lot with a baby and a toddler, so obviously electricity is being used a lot. We also only have the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night. Confused

How much has yours increased? I find it actually very worrying how your expects to find another £900 out of thin air essentially.

£600 a year, minus £150 Council tax rebate, so £450.

Thankfully had a work bonus for very similar amount so will break even financially. Though I would have preferred to spend that on something nicer for myself and DC.

MargosKaftan · 21/03/2022 13:43

Ours is going from £128 to £235 a month - that's gas and electricity combined. We can afford it, but something will have to give and so that will be a bit less spent on nights out or family days. Tis shit and worry for those who can't find that by cutting back on fun stuff.

Not sure why other countries can stop their citizens being ripped off and we can't...

UggyPow · 21/03/2022 13:58

I was paying £157 per month, did readings & they owed me £650 the following month they said I owed £500 (no reading) then the month after they said I owed £1200 - I have just done readings & they had overestimated gas usage by over 4000 units - so just waiting for an updated statement to work out what to pay monthly

3 bed end of terrace, 2 adults and 1 teenager. We don't have a dishwasher or tumble drier, our heating is on for an hour in the morning and 2 hours in the evening during the winter. It's off now. Our bill has gone from £90 per month to £210.

aibutohavethisusername · 21/03/2022 14:43

From £88 to £272 a month.

DelilahBucket · 21/03/2022 14:47

£540 a year increase for gas and electricity. We've reduced consumption so I'm hoping that will come down. It might not seem like a lot compared to some, but it's a 50% increase for us and that's on top of my none essential retail business going down the pan and an unemployed DH who was made redundant.

I don’t understand why peoples bills are so vastly different? Some people quoting monthly payments of over £500. Is that because of back payments being included or genuinely because they use a lot of fuel?

I had a call with Utility Warehouse recently with a view to switching. I was told that my usage was very high (large house, plus outbuildings which are electrically heated so this was not a surprise) - yet our April bill has gone from £240 to £360 (based on uasage not estimate) which is still lower than quite a few people.

[AUTO]jj6l6l0wdihf0 · 21/03/2022 14:51

Ours has gone up by £1440 a year.

SpittinKitten · 21/03/2022 14:55

My increase email arrived the other day - looks like I'm going from £390/year up to £900/year when my fixed tariff ends next month.

ouch321 · 21/03/2022 14:56

£30 a month increase (1 ,bed flat)

SpittinKitten · 21/03/2022 14:57

Oh, and they are changing the warm home discount criteria - I'm not sure whether I will qualify for 2022/23.

MumThatsNotFair · 21/03/2022 14:57

3 bed house has gone from £120/month to £300/month.
£3600 a year and we are very stingy with turning it on. Sad

Titsywoo · 21/03/2022 19:49

Ours will increase about 50% - why are some people getting quoted double or more? Is that more likely the estimates being really high so the energy companies can hang onto your money? We cancelled pur direct debit and we are paying as the bills come (and will put some extra aside in the summer months). Bulb wanted to more than double our monthly DD which would have been crazy even with both rises this year. I'll keep my money in my own account earning interest thanks!

Angrymum22 · 21/03/2022 19:54

100% from 1k to 2k, but I’ve finally managed to convince DH to give up smoking so we can now easily afford it.

Fireworksatforty · 21/03/2022 20:01

Gas and electric for us has gone from £90 a month to £200. Two adults, two kids in a 15 year old well insulated 4 bed detached. It's very worrying.

NancyDrooo · 21/03/2022 20:26

You all know you don’t HAVE to accept the increase? Mine was going up from £200 to £330 ish, so I went online and changed it back. I’ll review it in summer but until then we’ll just be more careful with what we use.

Madmog · 21/03/2022 20:41

Ours is going from £65pm to £114pm (we're not in debt, just breaking even which is ok coming out of winter). We live in a bungalow with dormers, so two bedrooms and bathroom added. Very draughty upstairs during winds - I'm so glad we can cope with it being a bit chilly at times as some of you are going to experience massive bills and impact that causes (we've had very hard times so know it's not going to be easy for some) .

tarnishehalo · 05/04/2022 14:28

Shell Energy have informed me my DD should increase from £68 to £323 per month (modest 2 bed with double glazing, insulated walls and loft) They can whistle for that! I'll pay a little extra on top of the £68 when I can, no way am I subsidising the billionaire shareholders sipping cocktails in warm climates.

woodhill · 05/04/2022 14:41

Yes I've increased mine but not as much as Shell suggested

BigWoollyJumpers · 05/04/2022 14:49

Bulb keep putting up my DD. I keep reducing it, but you can only reduce it to a certain amount. They currently want £370 a month. I am several hundred pounds in credit. I am very close to cancelling my DD, but you have to call them to do that..... guess what? Can't get through. What a surprise. Tossers.

ifonly4 · 05/04/2022 14:49

Ours has gone up from £65 to £114, but I had to confirm how much I wanted to pay and it said the minimum was £104, so I chose £104. I've always chosen the minimum and we're coming out of winter breaking even, so I suspect they always ask for more.

ifonly4 · 05/04/2022 14:55

BigWoollyJumpers - no idea how long they'll take to reply, but just under where you can change the monthly amount you pay, there's a link underneath that allows you to email them if you disagree with the amount. Has to be worth doing. Right now, the less they've got of my money the better - we'll get our money back at some point if moved to another company, but it'll be in limbo for a while.

onlychildhamster · 05/04/2022 14:59

My fixed deal ended at the end of march. I haven't got any emails about price increases. When does it tend to arrive.

For now, my direct debit is £163 for a 2 bed flat

DidymusAmbrosius · 05/04/2022 15:02

Pre pandemic we were using/paying £120pm for gas and electric. We've cut back usage of both by around 15-20% and are now paying double that: £240pm.

Next winter is going to be grim if they go up again, as predicted (another 30-50% depending on who you listen to).

BigWoollyJumpers · 05/04/2022 15:03

Done! Thanks for that, never noticed that little link :-)
