That's not how it's done otherwise various leaders would have been killed over the years. It's all about diplomacy. Unless there is a coup but that means the inner circle have to go along with it.

I thought this. Surely the fact he and his henchmen could face charges of war crimes or crimes against humanity, would atleast make his cronies think? Are they thinking of the consequences?

I often wonder how these dictators keep their power. Guess they have a circle of extremely well paid henchmen, above a hierarchy of well-paid brutal types.
