Stockwell (Tesco) Chocolate Spread

Thoughts please.... Looking at the jar.. Without turning it over would you expect it to have hazelnuts in?
All other jars that have hazelnuts say Chocolate Hazelnut Spread on the front. I only realised after I had eaten some on a pancake.... Luckily I haven't had a bad reaction...
Should I ring Tescos and say they need to put Hazelnut on the front of the jar?

Yes I would expect it to have nuts in. I'd imagine it isn't a high enough percentage to legally call itself a nut spread.

I would be surprised if it didn't either contain nuts or have a 'may contain nuts' warning tbh.

Everyone I know who has a serious allergy (including me) checks every label. It would be reckless not to.

I would assume all own brand chocolate spread is basically trying to replicate Nutella so would contain nuts

Wouldn't necessarily have expected it to have nuts in, but as the parent of DC with nut allergies, would have checked the label, as always. Allergens don't have to be listed on the front.

If you have an allergy serious enough to possibly need medical attention why on Earth wouldn't you check?

If you look at the non-value Tesco range, they do a 'chocolate hazelnut spread' and a 'chocolate spread'. Both the same size and price, but the former has hazelnuts as the third ingredient and the latter (as with the Value chocolate spread) has it as the last ingredient of ten. It's the same at Sainsbury's. So there must be a big difference in taste, and calling the Value one 'chocolate hazelnut spread' would probably be misleading.

I would expect all chocolate spreads to contain nuts , equally I have allergies and my daughter is coeliac so I always read the ingredients lists before buying .

If I had a nut allergy, or any severe allergy, I would check the packet on all foods to ensure there was no risk of contamination, before opening them. I have multiple food intolerances & check the ingredient lists on all food packaging. Chocolate spread seems particularly likely to contain nuts and/or dairy unless it specifically states it doesn't.

I would expect it to say on the front it was a chocolate hazelnut spread if it had nuts in it. But that said I have just checked the last chocolate spread I bought which was from Sainsburys and the ingredients have nuts listed!

I would expect to as hazlenuts are standard in chocolate spread.

Cadbury chocolate spread doesn't have nuts

I would think as a cheaper chocolate spread it may not contact nuts but I won’t assume so. As a parent of children with allergies (none life threatening) I would always check the label of any new product.

I would expect it to state “hazelnut and chocolate spread”
Or have it clearly written. “Chocolate spread” makes me think it’s just chocolate.

If I had an allergy, I would check the back in case it had snuck in. But at first glance I wouldn’t expect it to.

So you wouldn't check the ingredients? Bizarre

I'm a coeliac. I won't die if I eat gluten but it's unpleasant. I check ingredients - it's my personal responsibility and the reason ingredient lists exist in products with allergens in bold.

If you have a severe allergy and can't be arsed to read the label, that's on you

I dislike nutella and hazelnut/chocolate spreads so only buy cadbury's spread. Because the Tesco one is basically in cadbury purple and doesn't say hazelnut on it, I can see it's easy to make the assumption it doesn't have it as an ingredient. But if I had any allergies I'd definitely always be checking labels.

Genuinely baffled as to why the ingredient info listed isn't enough?
Or is the point that everything that contains nuts should have that info in the product name?

I would expect just about everything to contain nuts tbh.

They don't need to put it in big letters on the front of the jar, anyone with allergies should be checking all the ingredients on everything.

It's clearly in the ingredients. Many things contain nuts and it's not on the front

If it said 'chocolate spread' I'd expect it to be purely chocolate flavour and not nutty tasting.

Obviously if I had an allergy I'd check the ingredients but I agree with other PPs that it doesn't look like it's a 'chocolate and nut flavour' spread.

Loads of chocolate flavour things aren't nutty flavour - if I saw 'chocolate ice cream' or 'chocolate sauce' I wouldn't expect them to be 'chocolate and hazelnut' flavour. It tastes different.

I think it would be quite misleading if they put 'hazelnut' on the front of a product where it's the last listed ingredient - and must be a tiny amount in it given it's so far behind cocoa at 7%.
