Frightening and dramatic thread titles on the home page

Is anybody else getting a bit fed up of seeing them?

They're really unnerving me (unlike the long running very informative ones which are sensible and do not provoke such anxiety)

I have MH problems and have done more than my share of panicking this week. I'm done with it.

I've opened those threads and clicked 'hide thread' but they're still showing for me on Trending.

Is there any way of me hiding them from trending or should I just avoid MN for a while?

If we do have separate war board then they will still all appear in active or trending wouldn’t they?

I think so.

I was hoping there would be a way for me to hide them from Trending on my end but it doesn't appear so.

@Waxonwaxoff0 you must not have been on MN very long if you don’t think everyone has mental health issues. It’s tiring because they insist on reading the same threads that will upset them, and then trying to censor those who start those threads.

I've been here for 8 years. I don't have any MH issues, and neither do many other posters.

Cheekypeach · 01/03/2022 19:33

But the rest of the world shouldn’t have to alter their behaviour for your anxiety. It’s the other way round. You need to find a way to manage it. I don’t see the thread titles as dramatic, more theoretical or worst-case-scenario.

28birthdays · 01/03/2022 19:44

I'm just repeating myself here but for the sake of it.. I am not expecting other posters to modify their behaviour.

I wanted to know if there was a way for me to hide those things from showing in trending, on my end.

I also expressed that I was tired of the disturbing titles, which they are, and I'm not alone.

The thread Xeno kindly linked above is full of people saying similarly to me and asking MN to consider creating a war specific board.

I have taken all reasonable steps to address my anxiety. Thanks for your concern Hmm

Why are some of you so hostile? Someone struggling with their mental health posted a question asking for advice.

No "everyone" doesn't suffer with mental health problems (WTF are you talking about?) and OP wasn't asking "the rest of the world to alter their behaviour" for her anxiety (again, WTF are you talking about?).

Why don't you go and start an argument elsewhere and let OP get on with her thread?

Thank you, Bla.

I don't understand it either. If people went around speaking to others the way they do on MN nobody would want anything to do with them and there would be threads about them all over AIBU with the majority saying what arseholes they are

Exactly @28birthdays
I think some posters use this board as an outlet for their pent up anger. They can't express this side of their personalities IRL as no one would want to know them.

Some of the threads they chose are completely inappropriate though...maybe we should have a long running thread somewhere for anyone who feels like being an arse to let off steam 😅

Yes.

The only solution to this is for MNHQ to allow posters to hide or close the Trending / Active boxes.

Apologies for assuming it was to me. But to be honest I don't blame OP for being fed up. She's had her anxiety dismissed because "this is happening to people in Ukraine not you" and because "everyone" suffers with mental health, and shes been accused of trying to stifle important conversations and of expecting "the rest of the world" to change their behaviour to help her anxiety..none of which is true. She came here asking for advice.

So I don't think it's a bit rich for her to be calling people arseholes, and I don't think she sounds "incredibly unpleasant" either.

Hiya

On the mobile site (not the app, the old fashioned mobile site) trending appears right at the bottom so you have to actively seek it out by scrolling down. Might be worth you switching to the mobile site for the duration? Have a think.

Itsnotover · 02/03/2022 09:49

@SalsaLove

Sorry OP, but I think everyone has mental health issues. I’m on Citalopram and have been for 12 years. Having said that I want to keep up to date on what’s happening in Ukraine. The war boards are filled with speculation and don’t tend to be helpful but the BBC coverage is well done and compassionate.
Stop minimising mental health issues and the impact they can have. Shame on you.

I've just tried this on my phone, and it works - it's a very good suggestion from @FlibbertyGiblets. It keeps Trending very much out of sight at the bottom of the page below the message box.
FlibbertyGiblets · 02/03/2022 11:21

Thumbs up, it is a v good workaround, isn't it.

Elphame · 02/03/2022 21:21

Adblock Plus can be used to block the "trending topics" box if that would help.

For some strange reason it also blocks the ability to see the quoted text in posts so it's not without it's drawbacks but it may be worth it.

I wish I could hide some post topics without having to click into them at all first

Supersimkin2 · 02/03/2022 21:24

The loopy titles are vital as reminders that this is Mumsnet, not a reliable or objective news source.

Any idiot can post anything - as we see daily.
