Weird marks/stains appeared on wall

Hey MN, I was wondering what these marks/stains on my bedroom wall are. I have been away Friday-Saturday and they’ve seen to appear after I’ve come back on holiday. Grin my mum accused me of trying to cover something up, but I’ve not touched the walls as they’re above my bed Hmm. Any idea on what this could be?

Looks like a damp patch starting to come through. What's on the other side? Is the room well ventilated?

Rivermonsters · 28/02/2022 15:13

@PAFMO my bathroom, yes it is well ventilated. I often open the window

Any chance a chimney runs behind the wall? If no obvious source of a leak might be due to that - you can have damp stains appear due salts in the chimney brickwork

Do you have an extractor fan, though, or just open the window?

macaronip1e · 28/02/2022 15:19

Ah, ignore my comment then if it is the bathroom behind!

tanstaafl · 28/02/2022 15:20

Occasionally Aldi / Lidl sell damp detectors for a tenner ish.
Worth trying on that patch.

Rivermonsters · 28/02/2022 15:24

@NoSquirrels no there’s not a fan

Probably coming through from your bathroom.
We had similar in a corner of our spare room which had part of the shower unit behind it. It turned out to be a leaking pipe in the wall.

Ah, OK. You need a decent extractor fan in a bathroom. Can you get one put in?

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/02/2022 15:53

It's a damp patch. Could have been sleeping through for years.

You will need to look at what is on the other side of the wall. Tiling, shower, sink, any source of water, any cracks, defects in sealant or grout.

Now it has wicked through the wall it will grow, maybe really slowly but it will grow.

It's one of the things I have to keep an eye open for at work. If I miss a patch it is not impossible a landlord or agent would be very annoyed with me.

Looks like a leak to me

Looks like someone drew a circle with a black pen

OwlBasket · 28/02/2022 18:14

It could be damp but it’s hard to say from a photo, TBH it could just as easily be an oily mark. How does it smell?
