UC - can the advance payment be higher than the award?

Hi everyone.

I applied for universal credit (joint claim) and was eligible for an advance a couple of weeks later.
They haven't told me how much I will receive monthly but I was wondering if the amount of the advance could be the same as the award? Is there a possibility that the advance would be higher than what we will receive monthly?

I did an online simulation and it came out significantly lower

I was given the full amount, and could choose what length of time to pay it back over. This was over a year ago.

we had an amount of all the add ons of around 1800 before all deductions and was allowed an advance of 1200 and when it was time for payment each month we got a max of about 900 but the advance repayments was 120ish

Thank you for sharing your experience!

That confuses me.
We were allowed 1659 as an advance but the simulator predicted around 800 pounds a monh

The online calculators are quite often wrong, if you go on Facebook and search for the universal credit groups they'll help you a lot more with much more accurate calculations.

I got offered an advance of 789 as that would be my total allowance for a month.
I declined as I would only have got a fraction of that each month as I was working (but irregular hours)

I got offered the full UC entitlement as an advance but once my statement came through the amount was lower due to wage deductions

Thank you everyone.
So, if I understand well, i will get that full sum the first month, but after they receive my husband's bank statement with his salary, the amount received will go down the second month onwards?

Possibly not. The calculation is on what your husband's employer reports to HMRC so if they report earnings in the first AP (assessment period) then there will be a deduction at the end of that AP, or first month.

Got it, thank you !!
