Did you take your mum wedding dress shopping?

….Assuming you get on with her and that she was physically able to participate in wedding dress shopping.

Yes of course ... it is definitely usual to do this in an otherwise happy relationship!

MadameFantabulosa · 27/02/2022 15:15

No, she had no interest. I took her to the shop to show her the dress I’d chosen and she said “Well it doesn’t really matter what you wear as everyone says the bride looks lovely, regardless.” The woman in the shop gasped audibly.Grin

She also told me at the reception that everyone was saying I should have married my ex, as he was “so lovely” (he was an usher). She didn’t have a good word to say about him when I was with him!

ClariceQuiff · 27/02/2022 15:16

No, it didn't occur to me that she would be interested - she's not a clothes-minded person and in any case, I bought mine online.

I took my best friend and her mum wedding dress shopping - she was making my dress for me, so we went and I tried on dresses, to see what suited me, then she found a pattern and made it for me.

My mum would not have wanted to come. She was happy that I wasn’t getting married at home, because it meant she didn’t have to get involved in any of the organisation - my future MIL and I could do all that, because I was getting married in her village, and mum could just turn up and enjoy the day. This is what she told me.

Bluebellbike · 27/02/2022 15:17

No. For my first wedding dress I went with my aunt, my Mum's sister, as she had offered to pay for it. We only went to one shop and I tried around five dresses, buying my favourite one which was in the sale. £49. It was in 1983 though. My DD recently found it in the loft whilst sorting things out at her Dad's house. He died last November. For my second wedding I wore a lilac skirt and jacket suit not a wedding dress. My friend came shopping with me for that.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/02/2022 15:22

I wore my mother's wedding dress, but she went with me to shop for a veil, and paid for it.

Dilbertian · 27/02/2022 15:28

I went with my dm.

My parents wanted to give us a big wedding - and pay for it - but we wanted a very small and unshowy wedding. We planned the entire thing ourselves. Taking my Mum dress-shopping with me was an easy way to help her feel less cut out of the event she had dreamed of planning with me. Mum and I had always enjoyed clothes-shopping together, and we hadn't done it for some years. We were both happy with the results. I have no regrets.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 27/02/2022 15:45

I went with just my DM, she was massively helpful. I found an dress in the evening wear department in a London store. A personal shopper happened to me available who ran around different departments picking matching shoes and the perfect underwear for me. My mum and I then walked to John Lewis with the shoes and I matched them to some fabric and bought some to make a matching wrap for my dress. It was lucky I found such a perfect dress that day as my wedding was only seven weeks later. It was an amazing shopping day. We also popped into a bridal shop and I bought a choker type of necklace and tiara.

Hen2018 · 27/02/2022 15:45

No, it never crossed my mind.

I hired a dress though.

sleaf · 27/02/2022 15:48

No. I went completely on my own Sad

Fifthtimelucky · 27/02/2022 15:50

I didn't. We didn't live anywhere near each other and I was 30.

In any event I didn't ever go and try on dresses. Someone offered to make my dress and as she had previously made my sister's, I knew she'd do a good job.

I knew what material I wanted so we went to buy that and look at patterns. I said things like 'I like the sleeves on that one and the back on that one' and she pulled the whole thing together. She also made my 3 bridesmaid dresses and did a brilliant job.

My mother didn't see it until the day.

Itshothothot · 27/02/2022 15:50

Dh went dress shopping with me.

Sally872 · 27/02/2022 15:53

Taking your mum is definitely a thing. I took my mum and bridesmaids.

Redcrayons · 27/02/2022 15:59

I went with my sister for the first shopping session, narrowed it down to a couple and then went with my mum and MIL to pick.

They both loved it, possibly even more so because of all the free fizz they had at the shop.

TippledPink · 27/02/2022 16:06

No, took my friend the first time and my daughter's the second time.

namechangeanonymous · 27/02/2022 16:12

Yep the dress I brought in the end mum got emotional over and I knew it was 'the one'

ImInStealthMode · 27/02/2022 16:14

Yes, because she was visiting (we live in different countries) and I knew she'd enjoy it so I booked an appointment. A couple of friends came along too.

TooManyPJs · 27/02/2022 16:18

Yes of course. She loved it and why would you not (unless of course you don't get on, are NC etc etc). My mum would have been devastated not to be asked.

AKAanothername · 27/02/2022 16:19

No, she lived abroad at the time, I went with my sister and then had my MIL come to a dress fitting.

Twattergy · 27/02/2022 16:19

Yes, but only to one out of c 5 different trips. It was nice, but tbh she wasn't much use as she said I looked lovely in all of them (and none of the ones that day were nice!) Her rose tinted mum glasses didnt help!! Grin

Philandbill · 27/02/2022 16:20

Yes, we had a nice day. But because I knew my mum would say everything looked lovely I also took a friend who dresses very well (and who my mum is very fond of) to give an honest opinion.

TopCatsTopHat · 27/02/2022 16:20

It's a common thing so I would not be puzzled why you asked me. However though I love my mum, her on great etc she would have been a nightmare companion, she had terrible dress sense and is as tactless as they come so it would have been stressful and pointless having her there.

Hmmhowhardtochooseaname · 27/02/2022 16:20

No, my relationship with my Mum is too complicated. I went to vintage shops with my niece and sister. They helped me choose something special but not so fancy it would make me feel shy wearing it. When my Mum saw it she said "oh" so I guess that's a fail in her eyes.

Topseyt · 27/02/2022 16:22

No, but she was making my wedding dress. 😉

She got a pattern that we both liked and she felt confident to follow, and she took herself shopping for all of the material and the bits and bobs. Then she measured me (Blush) and just got in with it.

She did a lovely job and I was delighted.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/02/2022 16:28

Yes. My mum and both bridesmaids. We had a lovely day, got mine and the BMs dresses and had a nice not too boozy lunch as well. That was 20-odd years ago before all the bonkers social media pressure though...
