Grandmother in Ukraine.

My grandmother is a couple of hours south of Kyiv and I am afraid for her safety. I don't know what I can do for her. My head is spinning. I want her to go to Poland and then come to live with me temporarily. I can't see how I can do this ... I feel so helpless and guilty. How can I help her and Ukraine?

I'm very sorry to hear this. Do you have other family in Ukraine? Is there anyway she can leave ?

GoldiePrawn · 26/02/2022 17:55

I’m thinking there must be organisations you can contact, or the embassy, for advice on what you might be able to do in this situation?

girlmom21 · 26/02/2022 17:55

Speak to the embassy. They'll tell you how they can help if she is willing to leave.

Oh crikey. I’d contact your MP and see if they’ve got any suggestions. Or a refugee charity. Is she mobile? Does she have access to transport? Are you able to get money to her to pay for help?

Do you/she know anyone in Poland? If so could they meet her at the border? I know from the news that it’s taking a long time to get through border control but if you could say a friend will collect her would that help to persuade her? One of the neighbouring countries- can’t remember if it’s Poland- has waived all immigration criteria for Ukrainians.

I’m so sorry that you have family in this awful situation.

So sorry and what a worry for you. I don't have any practical advise, sorry but wanted to let you know people do care and are thinking about your grandmother and Ukraine.

There was a similar thread earlier today, the foreign office have a helpline number www.gov.uk/guidance/support-for-family-members-of-british-nationals-in-ukraine-and-ukrainian-nationals-in-ukraine-and-the-uk

Is your grandmother in good health? It's a long way to the Polish border, and an incredibly long wait once she gets there, would she be able to manage the journey?

I would agree with 7eleven that your MP and also your closest Ukrainian centre here in the UK.

Sorry you are in this situation. Atm there might still be some volunteers at soem of the borders who just came to see if they can pick up someone. This is now discouredged by my country's government as most people at the border do have arranged transport. There will be organisations that deal with this but I dont know who that would be. Hope you can soon feel better and have things sorted.
