WTF? Electricity standing charge

Wessexheavytreader · 25/02/2022 18:58

I’ve just received an email from Bulb to say my electricity standing charge is going from 24p per day to 43p! I had expected the unit charge to go up (it has) but the standing charge seems such a steep hike. Is this happening with other energy companies too?

Don't have a standing charge with my company thank god but I don't have a spare £720 for the increase and I'm on pre payment meter we are all fucked. Sad

Amichelle84 · 25/02/2022 20:44

I was shocked at the standing charge too, thought it was just going to be kwh getting upped.

We're renting and the flat doesn't have gas but still has the pipe work so we're having to pay for that too...so frustrating!!!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/02/2022 20:48

I'm trying to frame it in my mind as "If I didn't have access to electricity would I pay £13 pm month for it?" Of course I would.

Otherwise, I just feel pissed off at the robbing bastards and their price increase whilst they earn £££ in profit.

What company are you with? I have never heard of any company not having a standing charge. Sometimes they call it something else but there is normally a charge you pay per day wether you use any energy or not.

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 25/02/2022 20:50

My electric standing charge has gone from 24p to 57p I'm with bulb too. Both gas and electricity they reckon will be an extra 12.63 a week

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/02/2022 20:59

What are they going to do when people literally do not have the money to pay? I mean I'm one of them. My bills have shot up despite no change in usage and that is before the cap increase. I put the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Stopped using dishwasher, tumble dryer. Switch everything off and one lamp on in the evening. I pay £90 a month and for the last 3 months they have been around £150. I was in credit, now I'm £300 in debt. There are going to be millions of people who simply can't pay, what do they do then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Handsnotwands · 25/02/2022 21:03

Same. What even is a standing charge?

Wailywailywaily · 25/02/2022 21:04

Yet another Bulb customer here with a different charge and increase

They’ll put us all on key meter to claw back what we owe. No money to top up? No power!
Akire · 25/02/2022 21:06

Yes the old we never cut people off line is so false. No. Give you a pre payment meter and you can cut yourself off!

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 25/02/2022 21:08

Yip, mine is going from 26 to 50 I think. Estimated £900 increase for gas and electric. On my to-do list this weekend is resting the central heating controls to try and cut it back by an hour or two.

We’re lucky in that we can afford to absorb this increase but I really worry for those who can’t.

WalkingOnSonshine · 25/02/2022 21:12

Standing charges vary by area and are dependent on the infrastructure you have in your area. Typically places like the South West pay more, London pay less.

It’s basically the cost of getting power into your home. Traditionally the cost has remained low as it was split between all the various suppliers. With so many exiting the market this past year, it was always going to increase.

OddBoots · 25/02/2022 21:19

I might be being a bit daft here but regardless of there being fewer suppliers there are the same number of households to share that cost...

Goldenbunny · 25/02/2022 21:56

I got email from our supplier about prices increasing. Don't know how we will afford it but will have to some how.

From 1 April, based on your usage, we think you'll spend £33.79 more for electricity and £41.45 more for gas each month.
Your estimated cost for the next 12 months is £2,566.78. This includes all added charges, discounts and VAT.

WalkingOnSonshine · 25/02/2022 22:09

@OddBoots

Part of the standing charge forms something called the Supplier of Last Resorts levy. When companies collapse and other suppliers take on the customers, they incur cost and can apply for some of this to be covered, which is subsequently passed on to the consumer.

So we are paying off other people’s debts or protecting their ability to remain in credit etc.

EmpressCixi · 25/02/2022 22:12

What did you expect? Minimum wage was just increased massively. The stabbing charge pays the wages of the workers. Now they have to be paid higher wages, the standing charge has to increase.

Chakraleaf · 25/02/2022 22:13

I got this from bulb today. New rate is 1100 a year more.

EmpressCixi · 25/02/2022 22:14

*standing charge....not stabbing although it can feel that way.

Leah2005 · 25/02/2022 22:18

Bulb here too.

WTF? Electricity standing charge
Lennybenny · 25/02/2022 22:19

I'm not sure how you missed that it was the standing charge going up. That's why everyone's panicking. No one can escape the costs going up by reducing electrical usage.

ElementalIllusions · 25/02/2022 22:25

I just had the same email.

“We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 19.720p to 27.120p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 31.170p to 53.443p per day.”

Confused
Icepinkeskimo · 25/02/2022 22:38

Wow what's going on!

These are my increases from Bulb:-

From 1 April, our prices will be increasing
We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.763p to 29.632p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 23.296p to 32.141p per day.

We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.186p to 7.517p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

Goldensunnydays81 · 25/02/2022 23:53

Just got mine too, can’t believe how much the standing charge has gone up.
we're increasing our electricity unit rate from 21.596p to 28.408p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 25.653p to 51.625p per day.

We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.196p to 7.476p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

ElementalIllusions · 26/02/2022 09:28

The standing charge difference between debit metered and pre payment metered is ridiculous.

Roughly £9.64 vs £16 a month.

And bulb are refusing to change prepayment meters to standard meters at the moment. (No debt)
