I'm thinking about a career move and I'd be keen to hear about what other options there are out there.

OP posts:

In-house lawyer in the public sector, every day is different and every day we are working on projects that make a real difference to people.

linmanuel · 25/02/2022 18:58

@Phyllis321

I'm not quite 50k; I teach in an independent prep school.
Wow. What do you teach or are you Slt as well?
Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2022 18:59

@AffIt

QueenofLouisiana

Not me, DH, deputy head of a Special School. He’s incredibly happy in his role.

One day, there will be a post on MN asking for women's experience which is not responded to by some random OH/man shit.

I live in hope.

The OP is just interested in potential career paths. Chill.

Nurse but I'm in management. Love it!

The problem with these threads is they are so vague - OP is not suddenly going to land a job as say an Ecological Consultant with a PhD overnight unless she is on this track already.

Maybe if she said - I have a degree in French ( also fluent in Spanish) but no experience outside teaching what would be enjoyable and pay over 50K that I could reasonably break into?

MrsAD · 25/02/2022 19:02

Work for a tech company managing some of their biggest clients. Earn £165k, unlimited holiday, permanent WFH and a lovely caring team and company culture. Feel like I have to pinch myself some days after working in some tough roles along the way!

Yes, I was thinking that. I earn way more than £50k. But I've been slogging away for 20 years, have lots of highly specialised experience in my sector etc. If someone wanted to enter my profession with no experience, they'd start on something much much lower and have to spend time building it up.
allfurcoatnoknickers · 25/02/2022 19:04

@Throwmealifejacket @cheerfulpanda DH does procurement + some other finance and ops stuff and I think it's a real hidden gem of a career. He gets a ton of flexibility to be around for DS AND it's really interesting.

(Yes, yes I know I'm not supposed to write about DH on threads like this, but I feel like the flexibility angle is relevant. I also wrote about my own career upthread.)

tammyjess · 25/02/2022 19:07

I'm an investment writer.

stuntbubbles · 25/02/2022 19:08

PR and I fucking hate it. Partner does data analysis and fucking hates it.

Would love to do what I love but we’d need to move a million miles away to afford to live.

Chosenonesneakymincepie · 25/02/2022 19:11

@allfurcoatnoknickers
I love my job, like your DH it’s a bit Of finance, a bit If ops. Every day is different and interesting. I don’t judge you for commenting about his job.

Throwmealifejacket · 25/02/2022 19:21

Sorry I’m on my phone! Awful English and grammar.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/02/2022 19:21

Civil engineer, but it’s taken 25 years to get to £50k

KittenKong · 25/02/2022 19:25

When I did - I managed a marketing team for an international bank in the city.

It was a hoot - but later on working for a tiny little charity was much more fun.

Flubadubba · 25/02/2022 19:31

Am in publishing and earn around that ballpark. Took a slog to get to this level, though, and it's a difficult field to break into with low entry salaries (low salaries throughout until more senior/specialist levels).

Moobootoyoutoo · 25/02/2022 19:33

Supermarket manager, like others it's an 85/15% split on the enjoyment front, but that 15% is very enjoyable.

Don't do retail.

JolieJ · 25/02/2022 19:35

Technical Writer

JolieJ · 25/02/2022 19:36

@Mushrooms0up

I’m a niche technical writer. wFH with occasional expensed travel to London.
This is the first time I've seen another technical writer here! @Mushrooms0up
plus3 · 25/02/2022 19:37

Nurse

ZenNudist · 25/02/2022 19:39

Accountant. Mid tier firm, specialised role. Really interesting work. Always talking to people about their company and what makes it tick. Outside of London I reckon you'd be on 50k after 5 years. Inc. 3 years to do a training contract.

busyeatingbiscuits · 25/02/2022 19:39

Nanny! Love it.

I’m actually part time at the moment after mat leave but my fte is more than £50k
Pre- maternity I was on around £65-70k

newbiename · 25/02/2022 19:40

I think the thing from this thread is , you can't walk into a job at £50k.
Lots of experience and qualifications needed.
