I'm thinking about a career move and I'd be keen to hear about what other options there are out there.

OP posts:

Accountant in practice- it's my own firm

AffIt · 25/02/2022 18:28

@QueenofLouisiana

Not me, DH, deputy head of a Special School. He’s incredibly happy in his role.
One day, there will be a post on MN asking for women's experience which is not responded to by some random OH/man shit.

I live in hope.

Ecological Consultant (Principal level); PhD plus 10+ years experience. Hard work (long hours), but often very interesting/intellectually stimulating.

Senior Clinical Scientist in an NHS teaching hospital. Love it. Very stressful and requires a long training route though. MSc/PhD/clinical exams.

Civil servant in London, finance manager, salary 57k.

Phyllis321 · 25/02/2022 18:32

I'm not quite 50k; I teach in an independent prep school.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 25/02/2022 18:32

53k should say.

quicklybeingdrivenmad · 25/02/2022 18:34

Rertired from finance at age 48, earning more than that. now help run my Dh's family bsuiness on that

Crimesean · 25/02/2022 18:38

Finance in the public sector. The hours can sometimes be long, but it's flexible so I can collect DS at 3pm twice a week even though I work full time by working early mornings/after DS' bedtime.

I really, truly love my job. I know it sounds dull to a lot of people, but I really believe that we should look at spending every pound of taxpayer's money as if it came from the pocket of the poorest in society.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 25/02/2022 18:39

Widely reviled as a profession on here, but I'm a Director of a fundraising team at a big non-profit (in the US, but did the same job in the UK). I absolutely LOVE it. Get to meet interesting people, do a little bit of good in the world and no two days are the same.

You also have the opportunity to work in lots of different sectors - education, research, social change, health care, the arts, NGOs - they all need fundraisers.

Grumpsy · 25/02/2022 18:40

Contract management and contract placement, interesting job, pays well.

BoodleBug51 · 25/02/2022 18:41

Run a business with DH. We make bespoke household items, have a retail showroom and workshop behind with 8 staff.

Love the contact with clients, hate the after hours constant paperwork. If we get 2 weeks leave a year, we consider ourselves very fortunate.

Biggest bonus is that no 2 days are ever the same, and our dogs get to spend all day with us at work.

AnneElliott · 25/02/2022 18:43

I'm a civil servant in London. Absolutely love my job and always have. Great colleagues and opportunities to move roles - think I have had 12 jobs maybe in 20 years. I earn nearly £70k.

cheerfulpanda · 25/02/2022 18:43

Procurement manager.

Nice mix of finance and legal without the years needed to train as an accountant or solicitor. Very 9-5 and training/professional qualification usually offered on the job.

I’m public sector now but in the private sector there were also healthy bonuses for good performance.

For me, IT Service Manager. I don’t love it but do gain a lot of satisfaction from it.
