Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

@WeeFae

I am going to keep a small amount of cash in the house, enough for a week or 2 shopping, in case of a cyber-attack but that is all.
I was thinking that might be a good idea. I have hardly any cash these days, I think I've got £3 in the change jar in the kitchen and an empty purse. A bit of cash might be useful if there is a cyber attack. I have accounts with two different banks, I wonder if that is useful, would they be able to hit all the banks?
adriftabroad · 25/02/2022 10:06

Yes, I'm also taking 100̣̣/200 euros out this weekend. Never have cash at home, so would prefer to have enough for food JIC.

I keep meaning to do this anyway.

DetailMouse · 25/02/2022 10:08

I'm concerned that of there is a crisis here, prices will rocket and what we think of as enough cash for a week or two will be nothing of the sort.

Sorry OP but the last few days mn seems to be getting out of
Control for all these WW3 panicking threads. On a day to day basis this isn’t impacting most of our lives (although, for those in the Ukraine, I feel nothing but sadness of how their lives are being impacted)

Barkingmadhouse · 25/02/2022 10:15

Buy 1000 toilet rolls and 500packs of pasta 🤣 sorry I couldn't help myself.

On a more serious note I will be keeping the fuel topped up - I filled up at the start of the week and normally let it run to empty but I'll be making sure I always have half a tank.
Just incase the banks go down I will be withdrawing £200 as cash. Like PP I am with santander so the chance of me not being able to use my card is high on a normal day anyway

Rollonspring1111 · 25/02/2022 10:18

What steps will I be taking?
I'll be focusing on protecting my own mental health in order to deal with my own personal heartbreak.
I will be focusing on staying strong and shutting down from the world's problems so I can deal with my own without having a complete breakdown.
It doesn't mean I don't care. I just have a lot to deal with right now and don't have the emotional capacity to take on anything else.

here we go panic again-if the media starts this crap i will have to stock loo rolls wont i

But your worry is not going to really save you or your family. Say you have some cash squirrelled away. You fight to get to the shop and the foods been looted. What’s the plan then?
gogohm · 25/02/2022 10:20

Me no, dp is making his Russian clients pay in advance in case they shut down international payments. (Food related not defence so not subject to sanctions)

the banks wont go down so getting cash is pintless if the proces go up we're screwed anyway
LadyPoison · 25/02/2022 10:21

I did stock up on raw materials for my jewellery making business. The price of precious metals is rising sharply.

Ordered more oil for the heating as prices of that are rocketing and the coal bunker was filled last week.

Other than that no.

The bank's infrastructure collapsing (cyber attack) is probably the most likely of all the disaster scenarios. It depends how much prices go up and how long for but yes, in the worst of it there's potential for it to get very bad indeed, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Our international FA has advised us to more money into various international accounts. It's not true that people aren't doing anything. High worth individuals are doing quite a lot shifting around.

Yes I agree for anything long term things could get very difficult indeed, but there must be things we can do to help ourselves in a situation somewhere between "normal" and "the end of the world".

Yes, I'm absolutely certain that experts will be taking precautions. I'm just not sure what they should be!

This is all very reminiscent of the Covid threads in 2020. The ones that fuelled the panic buying amongst other things.

Rosebel · 25/02/2022 10:27

If there is a nuclear attack then having petrol, food or money isn't going to help you.
I'm not doing anything differently, we usually have enough food for a fortnight and that won't change.
Certainly not going to risk having all my money at home and getting burgled.

Rollonspring1111 · 25/02/2022 10:27

Cue the cash machines running dry by this time tomorrow due to cash dash madness.

Exactly. I'm assuming there's already queues at the petrol stations too.
KatieMaurice · 25/02/2022 10:31

If she’s telling you that she’s taken money out of the bank, who else is she telling? She’s making herself a target for robbery and that is a far more realistic threat than a banking collapse. I’d be very concerned for her.

pawpaws2022 · 25/02/2022 10:31

Same as always so no extra stuff
Always have 3/4 tank fuel, some cash, plenty of food/toiletries etc in store because that's the way I shop (buying everything when it's at low price/offer)

JuergenSchwarzwald · 25/02/2022 10:33

The only thing I will do is ensure that the car tank doesn't drop below half.

I have a bit of cash around the house.

Not sure why I'd need to scan insurance documents and does anyone actually have house deeds these days - it's all at the Land Registry. I have a photo of my passport information page in case I lose it, but that's a different point.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 25/02/2022 10:34

No I'm just getting on with my life as normal.

Whilst I obviously feel extremely sad for the people of Ukraine and angry at Putin, me worrying about it won't change anything.

TeloMere · 25/02/2022 10:36

Your "friend" no doubt wants to feel involved in the drama, like so many others with boring lives.

Siepie · 25/02/2022 10:37

I have about a week's worth of cash in the house anyway. I've done this since my purse (with all my cards in) got stolen a few years ago and I didn't have any access to money until DP got home from a work trip.

I'm not planning on doing anything else to 'prepare' unless the situation changes.
