Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

I've still got an extra bag of cat food and extra gluten free flour in rotation from brexit and covid shortages the kids are fine with nuggets and chips but I can't eat cheap food due to my food intolerance I bought a couple of bags pre brexit and just rotate through so they are never out of date but honestly I would have had this in anyway as covid taught me shortages can happen anytime

I'm keeping my books that I was going to buy again on kindle and get rid of I have candles anyway I'm popping over to the preppers board for more ideas

Natsku · 26/02/2022 19:17
@Natsku You can buy Lugols Iodine on ebay and everywhere online.
I'm really not bothered enough to buy online, I will just check if they have it in the pharmacy when I pick up my next prescription, probably panic buying will have calmed down now that the news has explained people don't need big stocks. Though I am going to renew and pick up my next prescription early, that is something that will make me feel more at ease, as being without my thyroid meds would not be good.

This thread has to be the weirdest I’ve seen, and I’ve seen some odd ones!

Cissyandflora · 26/02/2022 19:26

Can we stop the criticism of peoples anxiety? I remember back in 2020 where any mention of covid was met with vociferous argument that there must be a separate board for this and no one was allowed to mention covid on any other board.

I am not arguing with anyone- but I am expressing my opinion which is that people should be able to discuss anxieties about world events without being met with derision. None of us know all the answers but it should be safe to ask questions and ask for support sometimes.

Fluffmum · 26/02/2022 19:27

Well I can predict that everyone will be panic buying and petrol hoarding.

kitcat15 · 26/02/2022 19:28

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

There's a government scheme that guarantees the first £75k (it may have gone up) of money in a bank.
85k I think
Justgorgeous · 26/02/2022 19:29

Does she think it’s safer under the mattress?

saleorbouy · 26/02/2022 19:32

I filled my car up last week when it was all about to kick off to avoid the inevitable price increase for a few weeks.
We usually have sufficient cash available for a month of household expenses anyway.
I don't think there's much else to do really, personally I'd like it if there was a Ukrainian go fund me page so I could buy a few grenades and rocket launchers for the Ukraine forces to have a pop at Putin.
We did do a shop today for requested essential supplies for the refugees and displaced citizens that are being collected by the local Ukrainian community and other aid charities.
I feel very sad about the situation since I've worked with many lovely Ukrainians in previous jobs. I hope they can keep their resolve and see off Putin. Bless them!

I'm pretty sure unless you have 1000s of years to live, iodine isn't going to do jack after a nuclear attack! The radiation would be so high you'd die anyway - and I'm also quite positive standard glazing isn't equipped for keeping out such an attack! So stop stocking pilling cause you're leaving the shelves empty for no reason!

I like to have about £100 in cash in case cashpoints go down (since TSB debacle) and car with at least 1/4 tank full of petrol anyway.

The only practical change I've made related to Ukraine is sending a donation to the Red Cross appeal. Feel furious at Putin and horribly sorry for Ukranians - but trying not to let it dominate my thoughts too much.

LaDamaDeElche · 26/02/2022 19:44

Some people thrive on drama and verge on the hysterical. No one in the U.K. needs to take any steps. I can imagine if you live in the countries surrounding the Ukraine, you might be feeling a bit nervous, but otherwise, there has been no indication that the U.K. will be targeted. Putin is crazy, but he isn't just going to start randomly nuking countries.

WutheringHeights66 · 26/02/2022 19:50

The queues for petrol at Morrisons we’re heading y yesterday. Then I went inside and they were giving 7p off a litre and I realised why.

You can donate to the Ukrainian army

Nuclear attack no, of course not, but in situations where radiation is drifting e.g. if something happens to damage the concrete covering the stuff in Chernobyl then iodine is very helpful. Not in the UK though I don't think, too far away, but its a potential reality where I live.
Insanelysilver · 26/02/2022 20:08

I’m worried about Ukrainians and also about a potential escalation should Putin invade a NATO country. I’m not sure there’s too much to be done to protect ourselves though.
If there’s a world war I’m afraid the risk of Putin using nuclear weapons is a distinct possibility as he seems to have lost his mind. unless we were able to build an underground nuclear bunker with 35 years worth of caned food and water.
Not sure putting your money under the mattress would help much in that case as the currency would likely change to useful commodities, if apocalypse films are anything to go by.

Bleachmycloths · 26/02/2022 20:14

The sentiments seem over dramatic or unlikely. Actually ‘SOBBING ‘? Sobbing is extreme and I find it hard to believe. Either that that or the OP should have used a more truthful or appropriate word for her reaction.
Unless she actually was sobbing... 🤷‍♀️
🙄

NellyBarney · 26/02/2022 20:20

I am insulating my house and buying merino longjohns.

You don't get tears in your eyes when you see what is happening? Everyone to their own, but empathetic grief or fury are fully reasonable responses to the situation in my book.

I haven't done anything different for myself/my family. I moved us onto a 2 year fixed price energy tariff the other day, but I was planning to do that anyway as the standard variable tariff goes up to the same price as our new fixed rate in April anyway and now I don't have to worry about the predicted rise again in October.

I don't plan on doing anything else. We've always got enough food to get by for a couple of days if we need to. I'm certainly not buying iodine, if there's a nuclear attack then I have no desire to be among those walking the charred, radioactive remains of this earth.

toastfiend · 26/02/2022 20:27

Should add, I'm also working on the basis /hope that there most likely won't be a nuclear attack.

TheRideOfYourLife · 26/02/2022 20:39

I think you're holding your own very well, @DetailMouse 0 - though I don't agree with anything you're saying. I did nothing about Covid, and the world continued to turn. I am doing nothing about Ukraine, and the world will continue to turn. However, I would like to offer your friend safe keeping for her 85K. I have a superking mattress and would be happy to offer its underneath. You just need to put us in touch with one another.

not sure about petrol hoarding, it's too expensive to panic buy!
BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/02/2022 20:50

We've got a bottle of iodine we got from the vets for the cat's facial scab! Maybe drink that with some tonic?

@CountryMouse22 do you serve that with lime or lemon? Perhaps a twist of cucumber?

Twilight7777 · 26/02/2022 21:04

I always keep £250 (in a fireproof safe) at home because I’ve been caught out before in a foreign country when the internet went down and couldn’t withdraw cash or get it from the bank as it’s all digital. Maybe it’s OTT but I do not want to be caught out again
