Ben & Holly... Nanny Plum's Soup

I quite enjoy Ben & Holly, but am perplexed by Nanny Plum's soup in the episode "Dinner Party".

That's where King & Queen Marigold come round for dinner and inhale 'steam of soup' because it's very modern. Then end up eating the actual soup with the children. My DS5 wants to make it, and I have all the ingredients:

Carrots, Onions, Potatoes, Peas & Cheese. "It's not very modern!"

Who the fuck puts lumps of cheese in soup? Is this actually a thing? I mean, I've heard of putting an old dried rind of parmesan in minestrone....

Thinking I'll have to just do it to satisfy kiddo. I fear for my saucepan.

Thank you for listening.

Never heard of Broccoli and Stilton?

No idea how I'd make it like, but cheese in a soup is a thing.

Scraggythang · 25/02/2022 07:29

Well… I’ve heard of broccoli and Stilton. And I used to put grated cheese in tomato soup.

RaininSummer · 25/02/2022 07:37

Cauliflower cheese soup is also a thing.

I have a creamy veg soup recipe which has cheddar in. Cheese in soup is not that weird!
I always MUCH preferred Ben & holly to Peppa pig but I couldn't persuade my kids to watch it much so I watched it on my own. 😆

I have made a similar soup for years; it’s an old American recipe called ‘Cheesy Chowder’ (which may have once had a proper name, but that’s what it’s known as in our house). My kids noted at the time that Ben & Holly had cheese chowder. Totally lush, big bowl of comforting deliciousness:

Sauté onions/carrots/celery
Add garlic and stock (veg or chicken), bring to boil and simmer 10 mins
Add peeled and chopped potatoes and milk, simmer again for 10 mins
Make a paste of flour and water (or cornflour) and add to the soup, add broccoli and peas and cook until broccoli and potatoes are soft. Add cheddar and season well (taste once cheese has melted in to avoid over seasoning)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/02/2022 07:56

Grated, surely, not a lump?
I always serve grated cheese with my multi-veg soups anyway.

Any leftover cauliflower cheese (not that there ever is any in this house) or any cheese sauce, would be lovely in a soup.

My mum used to make Cheshire soup which had cheese in.

Prinnny · 25/02/2022 08:01

Personally I’d just stick with making ‘magic jelly’ Grin

Dustyblue · 25/02/2022 09:17

Yes to everything that everyone just said! Grin

Nanny Plum uses lumps of cheese. That's in a broth with potatoes, onions, carrots and peas. Am thinking I'll just throw a couple of cheese chunks in at the end, for authenticity.

I now want to make cauliflower/cheese soup, mmm.

Also want the Gnome's breakfast tree!

I’m Welsh and Cawl ( vegetable soup made with lamb) is eaten with cheese & and bread , could you do something like this?

Creeeper · 25/02/2022 20:04

I love that this is the bit you think is realistic and not that there is a whole land of fairies and elves 🤣

*unrealistic

I often feed the kids Miss Rabbit's Carrot Soup.

They wolf it down.

^^

Just serve on the side?

lapasion · 25/02/2022 21:14

I always assumed it was like French onion soup with a cheesy crust on top. But yeah, she does just chuck the lumps in there. I bet it’s nice though.

I like the episodes with the snooty royals. Ben and Holly doesn’t get enough love.

Dustyblue · 26/02/2022 08:31

Turns out Nanny Plum was right on. I made (let's all say it again):

  • Carrots, onions, potatoes, peas.. in chicken broth
  • Added small chunks of cheddar before serving.

It was as delicious as King & Queen Marigold pronounced it to be. Am so pleased I bothered.

I love Grandmama Thistle the most. "I am Spider the Supriser!" and she still uses the term "Groovy". As do I.

And Grandpapa Thistle, who played hide and seek for a year.

And Gloria Gnome. That Gnome-Love episode was priceless. Shame they didn't make more of them.

Agree I love it! Such a shame they stopped at two series!

Particularly love the mayor who’s the double of Boris 😂

MrsMingech · 27/02/2022 14:16

I put grated cheese in my soup before and it went weird and stuck to my teeth.

Whenever I saw that episode of Ben and Holly I get a flash back!
