Prepping for war...

Does anyone have any guidance about what we should be prepping?

Do you have an escape bag? What do you keep in it?

Should we start planting some root vegetables?

Firstly Biscuit secondly there is a specific "preppers" board on MN where your sort can hang out

TheFoldOx · 24/02/2022 14:43

@Redglitter

Do you have an escape bag? What do you keep in it

Where do you propose to escape to

A Robin Hood costume, a pencil, a child's trumpet and a small painted wooden duck?

So I’m not on it but in defence of the preppers, when everyone else was panicking about toilet role and tinned tomatoes they pretty much just used their prep stash and didn’t have anything to worry about
womaninatightspot · 24/02/2022 14:48

Wine, UHT milk, bread flour, loo roll and more wine I've given up booze but if we're going with doomsday approaching then I'd rather not go soberWink

Ashford · 24/02/2022 14:50

Come to the preppers board @Preppers you'll be welcome there Flowers

LightfoldEngines · 24/02/2022 14:51

You’d need serious money to build a bunker capable of protecting you from modern nukes.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/02/2022 14:54

" planting root vegetables" Smile

Why root vegetables in particular?
Many people tried to plant vegetables And grow them when COVID started.

I myself after spending lots of ££ managed to produce a few teeny tomatoes.

Many people were unable too produce anything to sustain anyone

RoseAndRose · 24/02/2022 14:57

Being half way sensible for a moment

a) energy prices will rise (we're not dependent on gas from Russia, but much of mainland Europe is and them seeking alternative suppliers will push prices up). That will drive inflation. So financial planning matters

b) cyber attacks possible. Now just about everything is online now, so think about what continuity you need. I would suggest keeping enough cash for 48 hours (in case of banking outages) and food for simiiar time (in case payment systems go down too)

RishiRich · 24/02/2022 14:57
  • Fill up the car with petrol
  • Start building up a reserve of savings if you haven't already
  • Think about what you needed when covid hit and buy that

Don't panic and try to do everything at once. Start small and build up gradually. There's unlikely to be a war here any time soon and if there is then we're screwed anyway.

Bitbloweyoutthere · 24/02/2022 14:57

Dh is good at growing beans. He can also do courgettes.

Pedallleur · 24/02/2022 14:58

Was anybody panicking when russia invaded Afghanistan? The Taliban moved Pakistan? No. So business as usual then until something changes. Dont go running out to buy Ukrainian jam or petrol/toilet rolls

wonkylegs · 24/02/2022 14:59

Insulation, energy saving measures
The issues with energy supplies and cost are already affected but are likely to get worse with prices rising across the board due to fuel & energy costs.

CoffeeRunner · 24/02/2022 15:00

Do you live in Ukraine or a neighbouring country?

If not, don't be so bloody ridiculous

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 24/02/2022 15:01

We’re not going to war and he’s not going to invade the UK. You don’t need to prep unless you are in Ukraine.

It will look d be sensible to check your budget as prices will rise again, but that’s it.

cutebutstabby · 24/02/2022 15:04

@TellMeMoreHellebore

well we wont have to worry about fuel prices when there is none....

silver lining right there

Haha and the utility bills can just do one! Grin
RealRaymondReddington · 24/02/2022 15:04

@Thatsplentyjack That sounds like you are going to make a bunker from pasta and toilet rolls, I'm not sure it'll quite be strong enough! Grin

Not sure there's a lot we can really do to prepare for what's happening and going to happen. Nuclear war would be an end to everything really. Reminds me of 'On the beaches' by, I think, Neill Shute, which is worth a read. I think I'm just going to try and make the most of the happy times with my family to stop feeling too anxious about it all. I feel sorry for those stuck in Ukraine, there is nothing you can do to prepare for your home becoming a war zone really.

RoseAndRose · 24/02/2022 15:06

Was anybody panicking when russia invaded Afghanistan? The Taliban moved Pakistan?

Neither if those was likely to drive energy price rises (though in the 1970s we were dealing with those anyhow)

And neither conflict posed a threat of cyber attacks (indeed in 1979 it was entirely impossible)

LowlandLucky · 24/02/2022 15:07

Vodka, just buy a dozen bottles.

GlacindaTheTroll · 24/02/2022 15:08

@LowlandLucky

Vodka, just buy a dozen bottles.
Hit them where it hurts and buy Finnish!
Heyahun · 24/02/2022 15:11

we live on an island so where are you going to escape... maybe get a plane

honestly im just goin on a massive holiday next week and gonna enjoy my life.

between this and climate change we probabl y haven't got much of future anyway so i wouldnt waste my time prepping tbh

better off dead anyway if we get a nuclear bomb dropped on us

cutebutstabby · 24/02/2022 15:12

Forget what I said earlier I'm gonna stockpile my HRT and vodka

Thatsplentyjack · 24/02/2022 15:12

@LightfoldEngines

You’d need serious money to build a bunker capable of protecting you from modern nukes.
So my hole in the back garden with a cardboard box inside won't be sufficient? Fucks sake, better chop down the fence and start building a proper shelter!
Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/02/2022 15:14

I'm doing nothing.

KloppsTeeth · 24/02/2022 15:15

I’m buying up shitloads of Cadbury mini eggs. When the time comes, I’m going to eat myself into a sugar coma and die that way. Smile

Sittingonabench · 24/02/2022 15:17

Ensure security on computers and phones, have more than one bank and keep an amount of money to see you through for a few weeks if the banks get cyber attacked. Keep records of past health issues and medications in case NHS gets cyber attacked. Nuclear can’t and won’t happen - there would be nothing to gain. Most likely disruption to daily living would be cyber warfare. It’s unfortunate timing as people are conditioned to be scared post Covid and catastrophise.
