British Gas price increase

I've just received an email saying that the prices are going up on 1st April. Not slightly. Massively. But a friend told me not to bother changing providers because they are all the same at the moment. Is this true?

Have you been living under a rock?

Wholesale energy prices have gone up massively and all suppliers are raising their prices (there is a cap on this but prices are still rising heavily)

Sign up to Martin Lewis website and do some price comparisons but yes all energy suppliers are now paying a lot more for energy and the costs are being passed onto the consumer.

It's beenin the news for months!!! It shouldn't be a shock.

IrishCoffee121 · 24/02/2022 13:59

No, I don't keep up with the news and haven't done for some time now. It's all about coronavirus and just depressing.

I won't bother changing providers then since it is the news that they're all pretty much the same in terms of their prices.

Thanks Smile

Everyone on the variable rates will see increases of about 54% on April 1st. People dropping off cheap tariffs onto the variable rate will see much bigger hikes than that.

They might be offering you a fixed rate as an alternative. That isn't a good deal for most people at this point unless you are very nervous about further rate increases in the future and prepared to pay a significant premium to avoid that possibility.

Well 'the news' has now moved on to Russia invading and bombing the shit out of Ukraine, and that's really depressing.

But I seriously don't understand people avoiding the news and general information in case it's 'depressing'. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. But you're not alone under that rock OP. There seems to have been a rush of posts this week from people only just now catching up with the increases in energy prices.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/02/2022 14:18

Even if you for some reason don't watch the news how has this not been a topic of conversation with friends/family/workmates?

Do you all live under the same rock Grin

All bets are of now with Ukraine (you'll need to Google that too)

chicagononsense · 24/02/2022 14:24

As others have stated this isn't new news.

You will be paying a lot more for your energy come April.

Do you know about council tax increases coming OP?

Do you know about National Insurance increases too?

Badnightguaranteed · 24/02/2022 14:26

Well don’t swap to Sse (now ovo) for sure. Mines more than doubled.

Pedallleur · 24/02/2022 15:03

mine (BG) has risen by 54%. Colleague on Sainsburys energy which went to EON has seen his rise from £1250 to £2500. Octopus advised me not to bother changing as their SVT is basically the same

nearlyspringyay · 24/02/2022 17:21

Watch the news. Covid is so far down the list now

HopefulProcrastinator · 24/02/2022 17:27

Just a heads up, this will probably also happen in October at the next price cap review.
