Americans won't be happy with today's Wordle

Very surprised that this particular word (very common for us Brits but never heard in the US, and I've lived in major US cities for years) was chosen for Wordle 250. Especially after NYT bought Wordle, I thought they'd only select words familiar to Americans. I suppose now we can get our comeuppance for 'favor' and 'honor'. Grin

@CaroleFuckingBaskin

Also hesitated. Was on line 6, and sat on it for ages but nothing else would fit!
Same here. I've never got to line six before - it's rated as a "phew!"
DrFoxtrot · 24/02/2022 09:15

It took me 5 guesses as I avoided the word on purpose, thinking it can't possibly be that Grin

Talipesmum · 24/02/2022 12:22

This thread title was a bit too much of a clue to those who don’t want any clues - I wouldn’t click on any wordle threads before trying to answer but having clues pop up in the titles is a bit annoying. I know it’s only a silly game but would be good if the thread titles didn’t give any hint of the ”issue”…

Sgtmajormummy · 24/02/2022 12:44

I got it in 4 but my answer was a “throwaway” as I wasn’t on my last try!

HollowTalk · 24/02/2022 12:46

Why are people still going on about 'favor' etc? It's an American site! Why would they use British spellings?

CointreauVersial · 24/02/2022 12:46

Ha! I also hesitated because I thought it was such a British word, but after two guesses I was really struggling to think of anything else, so went with it for my third guess.

DGRossetti · 24/02/2022 13:58

Anyone following notoneoffbritishisms.com/ would be less surprised. Especially as the NYT is a frequent source of NOOBs.

Star555 · 01/03/2022 05:30

Very surprised at today's Wordle #255 as well...wouldn't expect Americans to be familiar with it at all unless they work in certain fields. Unfamiliar to Brits as well, although perhaps less so than to Americans.

Florabella · 01/03/2022 06:36

I thought today was tricky, but not sure it should be trickier for Americans than anyone else? Or why they would need to work in a certain field? (Difficult to ask more without giving away spoilers!!)

Fridafever · 01/03/2022 06:42

Yes vaguely surprising word today but I don’t understand why more so for Americans. We’ll have to come back after midnight and you can explain!

HilaryThorpe · 01/03/2022 06:46

I think it is easier for those of us above a certain age. Also in lots of literature. I got it in 3. 😊

Fridafever · 01/03/2022 06:52

Also no idea why it would be easier for older people! Beginning to think I’ve got a different word!

Riseholme · 01/03/2022 06:54

I got 4 letters, 3 in the correct place and was muttering as quite a few possibilities.
Dh, who doesn't do wordle guessed the answer.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/03/2022 10:39

It was a tricky one. I was stumped for a while but got it in four.

Mollysocks · 01/03/2022 10:44

The invented was a Brit. The American spellings came up before the NYT bought it.
TonTonMacoute · 01/03/2022 10:45

Took me five goes.

By the third go I had letters 2, 4 and 5. On the fourth go I had letters 1 and 3 but the wrong way round!

Mollysocks · 01/03/2022 10:46

The game was invented by a Brit*

(What on Earth was that gobbledegook that just came out of my brain)

DrSbaitso · 01/03/2022 10:47

Today's was weird too. I went for it because I simply couldn't think of anything else.

beeswain · 01/03/2022 11:41

I got it in 2 today, a lucky guess as I couldn't think of anything else!

BarbaraofSeville · 01/03/2022 11:52

I don't play Wordle but I looked at the answer. Isn't it a fairly easy 'general knowledge' word? The sort of question you'd expect everyone to be able to answer in a pub quiz?

Sirzy · 01/03/2022 11:55

I didn’t think today was too tough. Got it in 3.

WhenDoISleep · 01/03/2022 11:55

It is also used in a v famous video game series

The word itself isn’t that unusual, but the particular letters in that order are quite a specific combination that doesn’t follow a pattern similar to many other English words (except with 1 & 3 reversed, which I would have assumed was a French word tbh!)
DGRossetti · 01/03/2022 17:18

Only just realised there are more than two colours (that'll teach me to assume I knew the rules). Direct hit to my colour blindness - one of the few times I remember I am ....

Myself, my Mum and my sister all got it in 4 attempts. We all use different techniques so I'd say it was a fairly average word to get.
