I've been on a training programme that's focusing on weight training. No cardio, nothing too strenuous. However over the last 6 weeks I've noticed my recovery heart rate AND my heart rate during and after the exercises going UP- so more BPM.
I thought getting fitter was supposed to reduce your heart rate although I know I'm not really doing anything aerobic I'm still surprised it's increasing.
Any idea why this might be?

Yeah you need to put a bit of cardio in there somewhere. The clues in the name.

You're not getting fitter because you aren't doing any cardio.
Your heart rate is going up because you are demanding more of your heart by lifting progressively heavier.

Weight training can also be cardio, if you’re doing it right!

But if you’re doing “nothing too strenuous” then you’re not going to be doing cardio.

However your heart rate during exercise SHOULD be going up, not down, and it will remain up for a period afterwards. However you should see your recovery time shorten as you get fitter, and your resting heart rate should lower.

As others have said, your resting heart rate will only reduce if you do cardio. I started running and doing HIIT workouts again at the start of the year and mine has reduced from 82 to 64.
