Hurrah! The return of Imperial Units!

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2022 16:27

The government has announced a taxpayer-funded study to quantify the economic benefits of a return to imperial units - a definite Brexit benefit.

I'm struggling to think of any. Journeys are all in miles. You can still buy a pint. No one has arrested me for my standard cake recipe of 8,8,8,4. What are the good old imperial units I'm forgetting that are currently verboten and what economic benefit will they bring? Are people desperate to buy a pound of apples but holding off while they're in kg?

"Paul Scully, a Tory business minister, said reintroducing imperial labelling would be “an important step in taking back control” and that a planned “assessment of the economic impact on business will be carried out in due course”."

Hoppinggreen · 23/02/2022 16:30

Well thank Fuck for that
Glad to see the important stuff is not being forgotten amongst all the possible war/pandemic/economic difficulties nonsense

FFS - This would be funny if we weren't paying for it.

Sounds like a load of shit I never learnt imperial measurements and I left school 13 years ago. Pandering to the grey vote.

rwalker · 23/02/2022 16:33

I've never stopped asking for a 1/4 of midget gems part from that what do we actual select and buy by weight nowadays . The vast majority of stuff already packaged it won't make any difference to me

MedusasBadHairDay · 23/02/2022 16:34

We still use imperial measurements for so much, I don't understand the people who think we've been banned from it? It's bizarre. Like I don't know a single British person who uses metric when they are taking about their height, babies births are accompanied by announcements of their weight in imperial measures, etc.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2022 16:35

What a load of shite. Whilst living costs are going through the roof.

I’ve got grey hair, but think this is a load of shit.

cakeorwine · 23/02/2022 16:35

I can imagine all the recoding of machines to calculate measurements in Imperial.

28 stone 3 pounds 3 ounces at £3.29 a stone anyone?

The metric system is used around the world in the use of measurements for a reason.

ramonaquimby · 23/02/2022 16:36

How ridiculous. The vast majority of the world uses the metric system. I’m in my 50s, I’ve only ever used metric. This isn’t a Brexit thing. It’s a grey votes thing

Legoisthebest · 23/02/2022 16:36

How massive are your cakes if you are doing 8 8 8 4 CakeGrin

cakeorwine · 23/02/2022 16:36

If we want to sell abroad, Rees Mogg will find that most other countries are happy to use, and indeed in Europe, they have to prominently use metric.

We were also never banned from using Imperial.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 23/02/2022 16:37

Happy to use grams or lbs or stones.
If it's fruit or veg I measure what I want by eye not weight anyway
Happy to use centimetres, inches, metres, furlongs and miles.
please DH don't explain the 1500m again

Maybe we should just use anything that suits🤷‍♀️

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2022 16:37

Surely even the 'grey vote' have got their head around grams and litres by now?

So what are the benefits of them being able to switch back? Nostalgia?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2022 16:38

Does he think this is a ‘Brexit opportunity?’Hmm

Grin I do like a substantial cake. Delia said 4, 4, 4, 2 and it was like a pancake.

Bring back shillings and farthings and half crowns and guineas!
Seriously though metric makes maths so much easier.

Not with Petrol. I can't do MPG, but it doesn't really matter that much anyway. I use what I need. 🤷‍♀️

It's still nice to bake in imperial...even though I'm too young for it, it's what my nan taught me.

GreenLunchBox · 23/02/2022 16:41

This is an absolute farce. What a joke of a country we now are

Exactly.

modgepodge · 23/02/2022 16:42

Wait til they find out that imperial units have been on the maths curriculum for y5 and 6 since 2014!!

(And frankly I wish they weren’t.)

That's the fault of the national curriculum then. They should teach metric, imperial, and other measurements like rods, poles and furlongs. It should all be general knowledge for everybody.

And don't be so ageist.

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2022 16:43

Rees-Mogg did write an article in the Sun, asking for readers to send him their ideas for Brexit benefits.

Maybe this was what they came up with? You wouldn't have thought it would be a major priority what with all the other benefits waiting to be cashed in.

Chaotica · 23/02/2022 16:45

FFS. As PP have said: this is ridiculous. Some people use imperial units still for some things which is fine, but bringing them back properly would be a nightmare. I did physics at school in the US and UK, and metric is best all round.

I'm also old and grey but still missed Imperial measures at school.
