Would you have said yes?

In tesco, only have a tenner. Shopping comes to 4.50 more. Cute guy behind me offers to pay the difference. Offered 3 times. I said no but then kind of regretted it because I thought... Is this the kind of situation people meet in? Maybe if I'd said yes and taken his number to arrange paying him back then we'd have started talking, arranged to go for a drink...
Or maybe he was just being nice.
I know I sound crazy.

How did you not realise how much more it’d be than you had in cash? Or had you forgotten your bank card?

Lily2075 · 22/02/2022 20:14

I had forgotten my bank card and didn't think what I had would come to more than a tenner.

No, I wouldn’t have accepted it. I wouldn’t want to feel beholden to a stranger.
I’d have taken £4.50 worth of items out of my basket.

SailingNotSurfing · 22/02/2022 20:16

45p I'd accept but not £4.50. Nice of him to offer though. Potential chat up line? Unlikely.

Lily2075 · 22/02/2022 20:16

Yeah that's what I did.

Not for £4.50 no. Maybe for 10p but not that amount.

KylieCharlene · 22/02/2022 20:18

I'd have refused too.
Unfortunately life is rarely like a movie.
My guess is that if he's a nice kind man he's likely already taken.

SiulaGrande · 22/02/2022 20:40

I'd have accepted it as a random act of kindness and been inspired to do something else for someone else eg local coffee shop does a pay it forward cuppa.

Wouldn't have taken it as a chat up. Unless I'd looked in his eyes and got a vibe then I would have asked for his email address to contact him to pay him back and taken it from there. If he said no, as above.

I had my purse nicked once in Manchester with my train ticket home in it, and a really nice man bought me another ticket and let me use his phone to call DH. I was with my DD and really upset. I asked for contact details to repay him but he just said 'pay it forward' so that's what I did.
