Where are all the parakeets?

Are you in London? Do you have any parakeets around? We had colonies and colonies of them, gradually over lockdowns they've disappeared. Just realised I haven't seen a single one for months.

We're over run with magpies and crows.

What's happened? Have they migrated but I've never noticed that before or did a cull actually happen?

Still plenty of them here in NE London, whereabouts are you?

GailLondon · 22/02/2022 12:51

They do move around… I saw a huge colony (thousands) along Hackney Marshes early one morning recently. Quite a sight!

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/02/2022 12:51

There are still loads in my area (SE23, and especially along the wooded area in the Ravensbourne River nature reserve.) And I was on Hampstead Heath about a month ago and loads were nesting in the trees. Perhaps that’s it, it’s nesting season so they’re less visible flying and squawking around the place?

They're in my garden. Shall I send them back to yours? They're doing no harm. They're just chilling in the apple trees and taking turns on the nut and seed feeders.

We were in london last week and walking on the periphery of Hyde Park (where the horses live) and we heard and saw some.

viques · 22/02/2022 12:54

Lots in East London around Wanstead flats. I am waiting for the ones in Kensington Gardens to tell the others about how easy it is to persuade humans to hand feed you..........

Gonnagetgoing · 22/02/2022 12:54

They move around a bit. I'm SE London and we see them a lot in local parks.

FennecShandDoesEverything · 22/02/2022 12:56

There are a fuckton here in W London Zone 4. I can tell you that because one blundered into my loft during Eunice and ripped some piping apart.

emerald1981 · 22/02/2022 12:56

We have lots of them still! South West London

JW13 · 22/02/2022 12:56

Lots where we are SE24/SE21 - see them frequently in our garden and the parks (Dulwich/Brockwell Park).

Cleopatra2022 · 22/02/2022 12:56

I've noticed more than ever here in SE London.

MartinMartinMarti · 22/02/2022 12:58

They are all in Hammersmith. Absolutely all of them, I assume, because it’s basically overrun.

KingsHeathen · 22/02/2022 13:44

Erm, some of them have established a colony in Birmingham!
Makes sense to branch out Smile

nearlyspringyay · 22/02/2022 17:14

We're in SE London, zone 4, maybe they've eaten everything here and moved on!

i'm in SW London & thinking about it not seen then for a while.

CovidCorvid · 22/02/2022 17:22

I saw one in Downing Street last week. Seriously.

SquirmOfEels · 22/02/2022 17:24

I've seen them recently in Greenwich and on Clapham Common

onemouseplace · 22/02/2022 17:25

I've seen them recently in Dulwich/ Sydenham Woods.

SBAM · 22/02/2022 17:26

London/Essex border (zone 6) and I see or hear them fairly frequently

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 22/02/2022 17:27

South East London and there are loads in the park behind my house everyday

chesirecat99 · 22/02/2022 17:40

Plenty here (Hyde Park), I can hear them squawking outside now.

IsThisNameTaken · 22/02/2022 17:41

SW London (zone 6) - still plenty round here!

EssentialHummus · 22/02/2022 17:44

They’re in the posh bit of New Cross, in my experience. My neighbour keeps them well fed.

shivermetimbers77 · 22/02/2022 17:44

Just passed a whole flock roosting on an old apartment block in Acton

WaltzingToWalsingham · 22/02/2022 18:03

I also realised recently that we hadn't had many parakeets in our garden recently, OP. I've seen them occasionally this winter, but usually they're daily visitors, noisily announcing their arrival, so you can't miss them when they're around. I do see more of them in cold weather and it's been a fairly mild winter I think, so perhaps that's got something to do with it. I hope they haven't been culled. I love them, and find their bright flashes of colour in my garden is a very welcome sight on dreary winter days.
