Where are all the parakeets?

Are you in London? Do you have any parakeets around? We had colonies and colonies of them, gradually over lockdowns they've disappeared. Just realised I haven't seen a single one for months.

We're over run with magpies and crows.

What's happened? Have they migrated but I've never noticed that before or did a cull actually happen?

They are in Walthamstow. I saw about 100 of them eating a tree in Higham Hill Park on Sunday, and a few dozen fly screeching down my street at sunset every day.

Loads in SE London (Dulwich / Crystal Palace parks)

PixellatedPixie · 22/02/2022 18:09

I live in North Surrey and we still have a load of them them around.

SW London, did have absolutely millions over lockdown that autumn especially on the pear tree. Last year and so far this year far fewer. Lots in Bushy Park last week tho. Seems they have headed over to SE London?

Iamthewombat · 22/02/2022 18:12

The most enterprising have flown north to seek their fortune. Several are sitting in one of our trees, shrieking. Probably because they have chosen the wettest city in England.

HazelBite · 22/02/2022 18:16

I have Sid and Nancy living in an oak tree in my garden.
However they are the only two who permanently hang around there are many that seem very transient

Legoisthebest · 22/02/2022 18:36

South East London, zone 3. Loads outside my window because my neighbour has a bird feeder. When I say loads I am not exaggerating. There's approximately 3 billion.

GallopingHighRoad · 22/02/2022 18:38

@nearlyspringyay

Regard your namesake. Now is the month where all wild animals are at their most meagre. The fats of autumn harvest are no longer being replaced and they herd or flock together and go further afield by day. The days are still short so they will roost in different places, locally to preserve energy. They will be back in April or May. I guarantee it.

ItWasARayGun · 22/02/2022 18:39

@SBAM

London/Essex border (zone 6) and I see or hear them fairly frequently
This is where I am and they like to hang out in my garden.
Boood · 22/02/2022 18:39

They might have moved to Manchester. We always had a few, but since the first lockdown there are hundreds of them and they seem to be spreading over a wider area.

whoruntheworldgirls · 22/02/2022 18:56

I wish someone would send them to york! I'd love them in my garden

RaininSummer · 22/02/2022 19:19

Are there in their holidays in the West country as we have some flocks?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/02/2022 19:38

Still plenty here - near Richmond Park.

tunainatin · 22/02/2022 19:39

I think they might all be in the tree outside my office

Doveyouknow · 22/02/2022 19:40

East London and plenty here!

Chishnfips · 22/02/2022 19:41

I saw a couple in Shrewsbury a couple of weeks ago.

SnakeLinguine · 22/02/2022 20:15

They were flirting with tourists in St James’ Park today.

inheritancetrack · 22/02/2022 20:18

crows and magpies eat the eggs and fledglings of smaller birds, so maybe this is a factor.

giddyasakipper · 22/02/2022 20:20

We have flocks of them in NW London!

WildRosie · 22/02/2022 20:39

Apparently there is a colony of parakeets not far from where I live in West Yorkshire. I have yet to see one, unless they're all disguised as jackdaws, feral pigeons and red kites.

RockaLock · 22/02/2022 20:46

Plenty in my garden in Croydon. Including one bright yellow one!

WildRosie · 04/02/2023 21:35

Still no sign of parakeets round here. I'll settle for a colony of hyacinth macaws if I have to.

Florissant · 04/02/2023 21:38

I love wild parakeets and am delighted to hear all the reports of their whereabouts.

LoobyDop · 04/02/2023 22:40

Yep, plenty of them in South Manchester.

Cherrysoup · 04/02/2023 22:44

Stanmore. Loads, they gather in one set of trees every night and then all fly off to roost.

Today, there were lots in Hanwelll (Ealing) loads flying across as my DH was buying a car.
