Taking my dd to see Mary poppins tomorrow and wonder if people still dress up for the theatre. If I turn up in jeans will I feel out of place ?! Never been before to a show in London only locally.

Whenever I've been to a West end musical, it's been in jeans and a hoodie/jumper, never felt out of place, lots of others dressed the same.

ChiselandBits · 20/02/2022 09:34

Sadly no, you'll be fine in jeans and will probably feel OTT if you do dress up. Considering how expensive it is it ought to be something to dress up a bit for, but no.

cariadlet · 20/02/2022 09:37

Some people dress up (not really posh, just what you might wear for a special meal at a nice restaurant) and others are casual. There's a real mixture so wear what you feel comfortable in.

I'm always in jeans, t-shirt and hoodie and have never felt out of place.

You’ll be fine in jeans. Honestly, it’s London, anything goes really.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/02/2022 10:59

No, people don’t dress for the Theatre anymore. Scruffy jeans and trainers are the norm.

balalake · 20/02/2022 11:01

No, people don't. Just please wear a face covering if asked to.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2022 11:04

You'll be fine in jeans, but it's also a good excuse to NOT wear jeans. I'd wear a dress and boots, nothing 'dressy' but nicer than jeans and trainers.

lollipoprainbow · 20/02/2022 11:04

Thanks all I had planned to wear jeans, just didn't want to get there and feel underdressed !!

I would put nicer jumper/top (depending on how warm it is) and boots but jeans are fine.

SpiderVersed · 20/02/2022 11:06

The most dressed up people I see at the theatre tend to be little girls in their best party dresses. The adults wear a full range of things.

FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 20/02/2022 11:07

Anything goes.

Cam2020 · 20/02/2022 11:10

Most people opt for smart casual, but as PP said, anything goes.

SpikeySmooth · 20/02/2022 12:06

Not jeans but a decent pair of trousers and a nice top. But not dressy.

whatnumber · 20/02/2022 12:19

Make sure you wear layers - it can be freezing or hot! Very unpredictable!

reluctantbrit · 20/02/2022 12:20

DD (14) and I normally wear dark jeans with a nicer top. I think a bit of an effort it nice.

DH normally wears chinos and a button down.

InFiveMins · 20/02/2022 13:02

@balalake

No, people don't. Just please wear a face covering if asked to.
Why would she be asked to wear a face covering? Confused
SkepticalCat · 20/02/2022 14:48

@infivemins

Where have you been for the last two years? Many theatres are still asking patrons to wear face coverings to try to minimise the spread of Covid, both within the audience and to reduce the risk of front of house staff and cast members catching it.
