Someone tried to Scam me on Gumtree

I'm trying to sell a spare device that I have 2 of. I put an add on Gumtree and got 3 hits. One guy asked if I would mind posting it to his nephew in the USA if he paid extra for postage (red flag right there but I didn't see it). He then said that he would pay into a third party because he's been stung before and wanted to protect himself (Red flag No 2) He wanted my email address but the one I provided him wasn't satisfactory and urged me to create another one (red flag No 3). It wasn't until I provided him with the new email that I finally caught on. The message said that I was to post the item, email them with the tracking number and only then the funds would be released to me. Sirens going off in my head - FINALLY. What was I selling? A brand new phone worth $1500 and I was asking $800, he offered and extra $150 for the postage etc. OMG, I can't believe I was so stupid to almost fall for it. No, I'm NOT posting it.
Have you almost fallen for a scam? I know I'm not the only one, these people are very clever.
Now, since then I've google the address he gave me to post the phone to, surprise, surprise, it's a vacant block.

I wouldn’t almost fall for that one as would never send anything without payment first. If you are ever posting I would probably sell through eBay I think as it at least offers a level of protection or seems to; i was once scammed online when paid for something large that was never sent and PayPal protected me as they did refund me when the seller repeatedly ignored all contact .

So glad you are ok and didn’t fall for this one !
