Painting fitted wardrobes

Just moved into a new place and the main bedroom has some of those old fashioned fitted wardrobe/cupboards surrounding the bed area. Not to my taste at all but we do need the storage so I'm tempted to keep them for now. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success in painting these type of units? Did it make a big difference and look ok? If so what did you use? Any advice or even pics would be massively appreciated.

What type of wood is it? If it’s shiny veneer you will have to sand it first, just lightly, so the paint can stick to it. If it’s Louvre doors it would be a PITA.

I did our kitchen units with a Frenchic Alfresco paint. Worked well but took several thin coats with a small sponge roller.
