A Discovery Of Witches -worth a watch?

I've been half glued to the episode on Sky at the moment - it looks like my kind of thing - but have been crocheting dinosaur spines at the same time 🤦‍♀️

If you watched it; did you enjoy it? And, have you read the books it's based on?

I love both. There's a lot more travelling in the book and bridge building between creatures all over the world but it was a decent condensed version of the books. Though I prefer the book ending to the show.

Oh no!!!! I think that's literally the final episode of the last season!

Can you see me trying to step around the spoilers for 4 books and 3 TV seasons.

I enjoyed it. Not sure I could have followed the TV show if I hadn’t read the books first

I like it - but I wouldn’t if I hadn’t read the books. I can’t really explain what it is because the show is fine…but I know I wouldn’t get into it if I didn’t have that prior investment in the story. (And witches and shit are my thing. Grin)

lucysmam · 18/02/2022 21:59

Interesting @RunnerDown. Maybe I'll find myself second hand copies of the books first then.

@Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov I think you're right. I wasn't really following what was going on because of the crocheting & counting at the same time so haven't spoiled it though!

I haven't read the books but have thoroughly enjoyed watching them. Got the finale to watch next Friday, but already wish it had gone on for more episodes.

Absolutely loved it.
Binge watched series 1 & 2 again before beginning series 3.
The only disappointment was the change of actor for one character (dark to blond - WTF???)
Storyline was fab & I loved the series but I'm a bit glad I didn't read the books first

lucysmam · 19/02/2022 09:14

@BlissfullyIgnorant can I ask why you're glad you didn't read the books first? Will you read them now you've watched it?

@lucysmam I read the Harry Potter books before the films were made and the films frustrated me with their lack of content compared to the books. I don't think Neville, for instance, was featured enough in the films, given his character prominence in the books. Also, when you read books you conjure up (see what I did there?) your own idea of what they look like and films can disappoint. I envisaged Dolores Umbridge as Patricia Routledge but she was Imelda Staunton instead

romany4 · 19/02/2022 10:17

I've never read the books.
I binge watched all 3 series on Now tv. Absolutely loved Matthew Goode.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 19/02/2022 10:52

It's okay. Not a patch on the books. They left out so much and some of the stuff they left in makes not a lot of sense without the context of the stuff they left out. It could have easily been 6 series. That said, it's a good watch. Do read the books though if you get a chance.
