As the other thread is filling up and things are just starting to get real. Here's the next instalment.

@handslikecowstits

Currently watching FWAVE. I want to know where it's going to land. US or Canada, I presume.
On that sort of track probably Western Canada or maybe even Alaska…

Given it’s still I think being used as bit of a test bed for things such as sustainable fuels, and also since it seems to be based at Istres/Le Tube which is a French flight test center I wonder if it is off to do some cold weather trials somewhere

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2022 15:04

The Typhoon 🌀 in the Humber estuary was on a very apt flight path!Grin

Presumably the mix of RAF planes plus the Draken Europe Dassault Falcons are doing various exercises.

From the colour of its flight path line it looks like it was at a much higher altitude than most planes - I think I've only seen red for the 50,000ft drones apart from that one.
handslikecowstits · 22/02/2022 15:13

FWAVE has just landed at Iqaluit Airport, presumably for refuelling.

paradyning · 22/02/2022 15:55

Has this been mentioned before? A flightradar24 podcast?!

Whatadayyyy · 22/02/2022 15:56

If you see a plane diverting, is there any way to find out why?!

I just typed DL2606 into Twitter search and got hits.

Fire indicated apparently

handslikecowstits · 22/02/2022 16:30

Wondering what JAKE21's emergency is?

handslikecowstits · 22/02/2022 16:42

Hydraulic failure and seems to have frozen.

Just came back in from work and saw that …didn’t consider that option…

Be interesting to see what happens next.

Whatadayyyy · 22/02/2022 16:53

@greenalltheway ah good thinking! I’m addicted to looking at this now. I always wonder about the most watched flights. Some of them are just regular flights so I wonder what makes folk watch them? And others are so random like the Ukraine ones that just seem to fly in all random directions

handslikecowstits · 22/02/2022 16:55

JAKE21 has disappeared from the radar before landing. Let's hope it's a computer glitch due to hydraulic problems rather than a crash.

For some time now the modern business types jets on long flights have quite often been flying at considerably higher than airline traffic.

Some of the biz jets would go straight up to 40,000 feet plus pretty much immediately after departure and it wasn’t that unusual to hear them (on the radio) calling in at 50k or more mid Atlantic..

cakeorwine · 22/02/2022 18:36

@CaveMum

Re the Virgin flight that diverted to LGR with the emergency squawk, I hope I’m not being flippant here but I do wonder if one of the pilots asked the other “Do you smell smoke?” Grin
Always a good way to get down to the airport you need to be at.

I wonder how many planes are doing loops just to burn off fuel whilst waiting for the terminal to be swept for assassins?

Thanks.... presumably there's some reason for this?

CaveMum · 22/02/2022 18:45

So glad someone got it @cakeorwine

I’ve already tweeted John Finnemore asking that he wrote an new episode of Cabin Pressure with Arthur working for Big Jet TV!

Good question, I think the main reason was that by being able to get above all commercial traffic it gives them less chance of getting tangled up the unwashed masses and increases their chances of getting long direct routings between the smaller airports the rich and famous like using…

I suspect the Boston flight might have caused questions on here!

Would have made for an interesting pattern

notimagain · 22/02/2022 20:12

Back to F-WAVE for a minute….I’ve just found the Iqaluit spotters twitter page, no mention of F-WAVE yet that I can see but it is an airport used for cold weather certification..

twitter.com/yfbspotters?lang=en

BTW another bit of useless trivia, Iqaluit’s IATA code is YFB, it’s ICAO code is CYFB…….reason for the “FB” is once upon a time, not that long ago, the place was Frobisher Bay….it changed back to using it’s local name but the coding stayed as was.

notimagain · 22/02/2022 20:15

Oh, should have said…last reported temperature at Iqaluit, early afternoon local time today …a tropical Minus 30 Celsius…….

handslikecowstits · 22/02/2022 20:24

@notimagain

Yes, I read on Wiki that Airbus tested their A320neo at Iqaluit airport.

In other news, I do hope the pilots ejected from JAKE21 this afternoon. I can't find any further information about what happened other than the hydraulic problems before it vanished from the radar.

notimagain · 22/02/2022 20:42

I wasn’t following Jake31 in detail but if other sites are correct it landed OK, probably just as well as it’s it’s rather special WC-135W with lots of crew and no ejection seats.

It’s always worth bearing in mind the tracker sites don’t always have great coverage when aircraft get near the ground and as a result aircraft sometime do disappear when they are on approach to some airports.

R03319 circling over Ukraine? Says invalid transponder code?

Presumably another surveillance drone
