Maybe a stupid question , but I am in a red warning area. I have tickets to take my kids out today. 20 minute drive down A roads. is it safe to still do this?

No. The Met Office says “The red warning areas indicate a significant danger to life as extremely strong winds provide the potential for damage to structures and flying debris.” You shouldn’t drive unless you absolutely have to.

Lovemydoggie · 18/02/2022 06:46

No definitely not !

Luckygrey · 18/02/2022 06:47

Please don't. The warning is there for a reason.

Definitely not. Why on earth would you risk going out un necessarily. A Red warning indicates a risk to life. There's no activity worth going out for in that

Mumdiva99 · 18/02/2022 06:47

The attraction may well be closed. Many have closed in our area and we aren't in a red zone....

Hangingtrousers · 18/02/2022 06:49

I'm wondering the same. I booked cinema tickets...

Hangingtrousers · 18/02/2022 06:51

And why would I risk it!? I've payed money which I doubt Vue will give back... my kids are excited to go. Why the fuck do we have this shitty weather in half term after a term of covid hell. I just wanted to have a nice week.

MrsTaytodarling · 18/02/2022 06:52

I think you're not insured to drive in a red warning..

WispaBurgerbites · 18/02/2022 06:53

Well, no one is going to stop you if you do.

But just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

OldSpeclkledHen · 18/02/2022 06:54

I need to get to work! Don't think my boss would be very happy if I no show because of wind (and I don't mean from my botty)

Hugasauras · 18/02/2022 06:54

Red is danger to life. I wouldn't be going anywhere. We had an amber warning recently with gusts of 90 and no way would I have wanted to drive in it for anything other than an emergency. We had solar panels flying off houses onto the road, trees falling on cars. Absolutely not worth the risk.

CrypticCode · 18/02/2022 06:54

This is interesting. Do you have a link please? Would love to show this to dh!
imamumgetmeoutofhere · 18/02/2022 06:55

I wouldn't out there unless I absolutely had to.

I'm in an amber warning area but have to get to work (NHS) so don't have a lot of choice. Crapping it though Confused

www.google.com/amp/s/www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/plymouth-news/do-not-drive-during-storm-6677081.amp

Check your local council/police force. They will most likely have issued a 'do not travel unless vital' recommendation.

We were meant to be driving from SW England to London today to see mum...for first time since Covid...but friend postponed as he was worried about weather forecast a couple of days ago.
Don't drive. Motorways with high sided vehicles are scary.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/02/2022 07:00

Wow it's like all the obvious covid questions all over again!

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/02/2022 07:01

We’ve not had a storm this bad for 30 years, I’m old enough to remember but not everyone is.

HorrocksToThem · 18/02/2022 07:06

I wouldn't go out for something like that today, annoying as it is It's not worth the risk. I've still got to go to work. I work in a nursery and the manager is not closing it even though we're in a red area so I've still got to go to work. Worried as there's a lot of trees on my journey.

PollyPurpose · 18/02/2022 07:12

I drove in bad winds three years ago. I was away with my partner at the time. It was a storm and windy but NOTHING like it is today.
They didn’t issue a red I don’t think but they issued a “travel only if you have to”.

Anyway- I had a near death experience and I’d urge you not to go. We were driving down a lane and a huge tree fell across the road. I was only going 20mph and did an emergency stop. I honestly haven’t ever been so scared. I had to do a ten point turn in panic mode and drive quickly out of the lane surrounded by trees. We stuck to main roads and got back to london as swiftly as possible.

You might be hit by a tree, a flying trampoline, anything tbh! Wouldn’t risk it for a day trip sadly

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 18/02/2022 07:15

@MrsTaytodarling

I think you're not insured to drive in a red warning..
Sorry but this is incorrect.
itsgettingweird · 18/02/2022 07:16

We weren't in red but our local attractions were closing today.

We are now in new red warning and all schools etc have closed.

I can't believe your actually seriously suggesting taking your kids out in a red warning? Do you realise this hasn't happened before and therefore means something other than "be aware" 🤦🏼‍♀️

MrsTaytodarling · 18/02/2022 07:19

I'm sorry that was a mistake about insurance. Someone told me that earlier but I only googled it now

MsTSwift · 18/02/2022 07:20

The attraction will be shut anyway surely
