Maybe a stupid question , but I am in a red warning area. I have tickets to take my kids out today. 20 minute drive down A roads. is it safe to still do this?

In '87 you you feel the house swaying, major road signs were bent over and loads of damage was caused by tiles, signage etc being blown off buildings. Not something you want to be out and about in.

@MrsTaytodarling

I think you're not insured to drive in a red warning..
This is just the latest urban myth doing the rounds, and it's not true. Honestly - it takes two seconds to Google and check.

@user94747295

I am not worried about the money of the tickets. My kids were looking forward to the day, that's my issue.

I just wasn't sure of the general rule of a red warning as I don't remember one before.

People saying that I am happy to risk my kids life are just ridiculous because otherwise I would of just taken them without trying to understand the warning.

How can you not understand the warning? It's been coming with explanations for days and the new red warning area is no different.

Red warning - danger to life. It couldn't be any clearer.

Depends where you are in the Country.

I am in a red area. Could do with popping ro the shop but not going to as not urgent looks like a day on the sofa.

Most visitor attractions in the red/amber zones are closing anyway so hopefully you'll be able to transfer your tickets.

Arwen was a red worming, but not as severe a storm as 1990 (which is the one I assume broadcasters are referring to when they say worst in 30 years - I don't think they're referencing all red warning, but rather the storms which were worse that Eunice is forecast to be)

1987 had higher wind speeds than 1990, and loads of trees down (and no weather warning!) but was essentially overnight when people weren't out and about much, therefor fewer casualties.

Needdoughnuts · 18/02/2022 11:05

Eunice is the same type as 1987. Since the 'non-warning' of that one measures were put in place that means everyone knows now and should treat these warnings with respect. In 1987 15 million trees were lost and were the main cause of death. Weakened trees caused lots of problems . You just don't know when a tree is going to fall! Stay home, the warnings are not given lightly. No business should expect non-emergency staff to be going in. As a country that doesn't experience extreme weather conditions I suppose it's hard for some to take it seriously. Good luck to everyone in coastal areas and stay as safe as possible.

I wouldn't. I literally got blown from the left lane of the motorway all the way into the right lane this morning. Was about a foot away from hitting the central barrier. Only doing about 40mph. Miracle I didn't hit something.

BasiliskFace · 18/02/2022 12:36

I remember 1987 - a tree fell through the roof of the house opposite. In my red area it doesn't feel anything like that although it is very blowy. I haven't seen any tiles off roofs, no fences down, there are some small bins blowing down the road. There are plenty of people driving. I have just walked into town and most things are open - just a gift shop, Lush and the library closed as far as I can see,
Of course it could get worse later.
