Type in your accent

Inspired by another thread, just for fun/curiosity.

For example if I were to type the phrase "I'm asking mumsnetters how they sound when they speak" like I say it, it would be

"Eye-hm arsking muhms-net-ters how thay sownd when thay spee-k"

Bonus points for geographical guess though I did say in the other thread!

Although, if I'm around my mum and sister (and before she died, my nan) I do slip into:

Ihm arskin muhms-neh-hers ow thay sahnd wen thay spee-yk

Lol sorry, but this reminds me of awkward 19th century novels where the lowly servants' classes' speech is phonetically reproduced.

That said: Eye-m a (like apple) sking muhms-net-ters how thay sownd when thay spee-k"

No clue where you are from

Jilly Cooper was a sod for doing this in her books. Cleaners and gardeners got the “write down how it sounds” treatment.

meow1989 · 17/02/2022 23:50

I actually gave up on a book recently because they did this so I do take the comments 😅

I'd pronounce it the same as you op. I'm in SE/home counties.

I'm asskin' Mumsne-ers how they speak

I don't pronounce the T or N for example, on the end of words, or the tt in mumsnetters, I think it's called a glottal stop? There's also a trace amount of another accent from 400 miles away.

meow1989 · 17/02/2022 23:57

@istayedforthefeminism yup, me tooSmile

Half my family are from central/North London which is what I slip into, despite never actually living there myself Hmm

Eye'm arsking mummznetters to write down how thay speek.

Australian. Bit samey in print but our inflections are distinctive, so in spoken words I'd sound different from all of youse pommy sheilas.

MeridasMum · 18/02/2022 00:27

A'm askin' Mumsne-urs tae rite how thay speek

That's actually not how I speak but it is the best I can do for an accent that's often quite strong.

I wonder if anyone recognises it?

Heartofglass12345 · 18/02/2022 00:27

I haven't seen you for yers, come over yer and have a look at my yer, it's hurtin' Grin

ThirdElephant · 18/02/2022 00:35

'I'm asking (short a, like apple), Mumsnettuhs how they speak.'

If I'm not being careful, I might drop the h from how.
