Just been out the roads are mad busy, ditto shops. Battening down the hatches I guess. Our house all electric so we're stuffed if the power goes down we're in a red area. But we do have candles, matches and torches so will be hunkering down with a book .

Anyone better prepared

Fish tanks, insulate from the outside with foil/bubblewrap, before power goes off?

Hope everyone was ok overnight.

So far, we’re fine. Lots of wind in the early hours and it’s picking up but we’re in Amber rather than Red so not expecting a lot of damage. I think it’s expected to peak later this morning though. We do have v large trees on our property but they are regularly maintained (every 2yrs a tree surgeon comes and checks their health and stability and removes any loose or dead wood) and luckily our roof was done a few weeks ago as we had a couple of loose slates. Unintended good timing!

I’m on the outskirts of the red warning and it’s beautiful blue skies here 😂 just a tad windy!

Brownlongearedbat · 18/02/2022 11:04

Well, the spring tide came and went this morning on the Severn. High tide here was 9am and it was lower than yesterday's, so no tidal surge. The low pressure should have passed over by the next high tide tonight. I have done the weekly shop this morning. I had the supermarket almost to myself and the roads are like a Sunday. The sun was shining and there was a light breeze. It's got up a bit now, but nothing exceptional and only light rain with the sun trying to break through. We are right slap bang in the 'red zone', but they have either exaggerated the danger or else it's taken a slightly different course.
I can help thinking that the nanny state is becoming excessive. Give us the information, yes, but then let us decide how to deal with that information. I get heartily sick of being advised how the government thinks I should behave in a certain set of circumstances - how to infantilise your citizens.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/02/2022 11:20

@Brownlongearedbat We're in the red zone and have had it bad, shed gone, fence going etc.
They need to err on the safe side with the warnings, don't write it off just because you're ok.

AdoraBell · 18/02/2022 11:45

We’re in South Somerset, apparently power cut close to our town but we still have power. Luckily we are fairly high up so not likely to have flooding. If we lose power we’ll be stuffed. Only moved about 6 weeks ago so still organising 🤦‍♀️ If needs be we can live on sandwiches and cake for a few days, plus fruit and veg.

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2022 11:49

Yep we have all those

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2022 12:01

Just rtft we are lightweights in comparison but do have stuff in title

HeadPain · 18/02/2022 14:40

Don’t worry they will probably have back up generator etc. Sorry for your loss Flowers

@Mostlyjustrunning

Thank you.

HeadPain · 18/02/2022 14:40

It's got quite windy here now in the last hour or so, but nothing drastic has happened yet that I know of. Hope it doesn't get worse.

HeadPain · 18/02/2022 14:42

There seems to be contradictory info about whats going to happen where I live. Can't get accurate information. Lancashire as a whole has Amber and Yellow warning.?? Don't know for my exact village. People saying Amber.

ive seen documentary on similar theme called survival prepping

We have a drawer with candles, matches, wind up torch/radio/ phone charger and a couple of battery powered lights. I learnt from this forum that you can fill a plastic milk bottle with water and put a head torch round it, to make a more diffuse light. We have blankets.
Had not thought of filling a flask but that's a good idea with potential power cut. Wind has really picked up where I live. A couple of friends are without power as of an hour ago.
Luckily it's not cold really so keeping warm no problem. If it was I'd keep a couple of hot water bottles on the go. As it is, I have a warm dog here doing same job.
My water butt would deal with flushing toilet if necessary. We always keep 2 glass bottles of fresh tap water since we had a day without water in 2017, because of a major pipe leak in our town. There were fights over bottled water in the supermarkets.
I've had enough power cuts in my lifetime to think it's reasonable to make a few preparations. Mostly because a power cut is very inconvenient. The longest one was after the 1987 hurricane when we were out including water) for ten days.

Tigersonvaseline · 18/02/2022 16:05

Lucky grey, ten day's???

SartresSoul · 18/02/2022 17:01

It isn’t going to be so bad where I am, only a yellow warning so think we’ll be ok. Never suffered with power cuts and nowhere near water so won’t flood.

Luckygrey · 18/02/2022 18:43

@Tigersonvaseline

Yep, we were rural so last on the list. Thinking about it, water wasn't that long but power was
HeadPain · 18/02/2022 18:52

Big tree fallen down just down the road from us. It's laying across the road blocking one of the roads in/out the village. Same thing happened on another two roads into/out of the village a couple nights ago. Bloody hope the trees opposite us don't fall down.

AdoraBell · 20/02/2022 22:17

Quite a few trees down in our area. We we supposed to go to another town early on Friday. Changed that to Saturday and saw a mature tree that fell across the road, it had been cut to clear the road.

Fingers crossed for your village HeadPain
