3 weeks post partum and always cold...wtf

I've gone from being always boiling hot...sleep in underwear, with window open in height of winter, always arguing with dh about temperature in the flat etc etc...

To sleeping in long sleeved pj's, hot water bottle and dressing gown with hood. In the day its the same, I'm always chilly, and have had to turn the heating right up.

It's not because the temperature has dropped. It's been colder than this in the past and I'd still be happy to sleep with the window open.

This is so unlike me it's a mystery. I have read about post partum chills but that's just straight after birth isn't it? I'm 3 weeks in and its just weird. I don't have a temperature or fever, my c section scar seems to be healing nicely.

Did the surgeon sever my internal temperature gauge? What on earth is going on here?

Thyroid issues or anaemia? How are your energy levels?

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/02/2022 11:49

Make an appointment with your GP.

GreatPretender1977 · 17/02/2022 11:53

Energy levels are to be expected I guess, with the sleep deprivation, not as bad as my first child, but then I have a new dh who is very hands on and so I am tired but not exhausted.

Why should I speak to GP? What do you think it could be? I've Googled it but....nothing. and my GP is utter shit, looking to move surgery, something I planned to do this week but haven't yet

Oh! This actually could be it. I was low on iron during the pregnancy and was taking tablets. They caused me bad constipation so the midwife told me to come off them...

Best ways to top up your iron naturally- apricots, dark green veg, eggs, cereal (but not with milk).
Eat the above with orange juice as the vit c helps you absorb the iron.
Avoid caffeine, tea and milk with food as they stop you absorbing the iron.

Also, you've lost your personal heating system. It may take a bit to adjust.

Hot drinks, layers, keep your feet and neck warm, get enough sleep.

You are probably exhausted with that 2am feeling.

VivX · 17/02/2022 12:19

I found that I feel colder when tired (so, as a sleep-deprived new parent, you're probably very tired)
Also, as PP said, you've had a personal heating system (I was always over-heated when pregnant and post pregnancy going back to "normal" felt colder)

GreatPretender1977 · 17/02/2022 12:22

Thank you for the pointers on natural ways to get iron

Even before I was pregnant I was always hot. Like, boiling. When pregnant it changed...I wasn't too hot or too cold. It was one of the very very few things about pregnancy that I enjoyed.

And yes to being tired and cold...that makes a lot of sense
