Why does very windy weather make me feel so stressed.

It's ridiculous. I'm grinding my teeth with stress at every gust. I mean, I'm insured. What's the worst that could happen?

@bloodywhitecat I hope the storm passes with no problems for you Flowers

Peanutssuck · 16/02/2022 20:45

I hate it, and I really hear you OP. I'm stressed out because I'M the one who has to sort out the damage. My fences and gates are on their last legs, my dog will escape if I let him out, and I don't want to venture out to see the damage.
I absolutely loved storms like this when I was younger and lived at home. My parents dealt with the damage. Now it's up to me to sort out because apparently I'm an adult Grin Flowers for you @bloodywhitecat.

DoctorSnortles · 16/02/2022 21:23

I hate it, too. Much of my roof blew off in 60mph gusts a few years ago. I can't see us getting through 80mph gusts without massive damage. We are in an exposed, rural location and always get a battering, but I am terrified at the prospect of the forecast high winds. We have insurance, but it's frightening when the roof peels off and tiles catapult themselves into the garden.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 16/02/2022 21:48

After being caught by mega winds a couple of years ago, and having to run into a wall to stop myself, I am now really anxious about stormy weather.

We live close to a beach and river and they've been closed off, with a threat to life warning about going near there due to open water/wind.
We'll be staying well away but just living close to that makes me feel nervous.

LoveFall · 16/02/2022 21:54

I hate it too. Our apartment faces the Pacific Ocean and we get some fierce wind. A few months ago we had a tornado go right over us. Knocked down a tree onto our street.

Scary. Be safe all of you.

SweetestThing · 16/02/2022 22:05

During the storm that hit Glasgow in Jan 68 (yes, I'm old), a slate blown off the roof of a house opposite crashed through my bedroom window and slammed my door shut. Books, paper, toys blowing round the room and my mum trying to open the door against this gale. Dad on night shift (police). I'm not a fan of strong wind as a result, unsurprisingly. Still remember screaming and mum not being able to get me out of my room. I was 9.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 16/02/2022 22:07

@HipposHaveNipples

I must be weird, I love storms. Something about being cosy and warm in the house and listening to the wind and rain raging outside. I love it.
Me too! Was wondering if I was the only one.
GerardWay123 · 16/02/2022 22:14

I was told by a teacher that the children go hyper when it's really windy. No idea why.

@bloodywhitecat we have a thing in place with our electricity company whereby if we have a power cut they get a generator to us asap as we have two disabled daughters. I don't know how long it takes to put into place, might be too late or you for these storms, but maybe something to look into? I hope all goes well for you over the coming days and your dh is comfortable Flowers

I love storms, when I am safe indoors, sat by the fire, glass of red in hand watching it all blow over. But this time I'm a little worried about my poor greenhouse. It's new and we've barely used it (not been able to buy staging to sow seeds but have been collecting free wooden bed frames to make some) and I really could do without it getting damaged before actually enjoying it.

Thank you, I will look into that tonight.

Icenii · 16/02/2022 22:37

It's strange isn't it. I love storms. I feel energised and full of adrenaline. I don't feel like that about anything else that can inflict damage but they make me feel hyper.

Davetheshoes · 16/02/2022 23:53

The wind terrifies me too, it unsettles me and my stomach knots. I've checked BBC Weather about 100 x tonight. I'm convinced we'll lose the roof and I doubt the old shed will last the night. I do tend to catastrophise though!

TheChosenTwo · 17/02/2022 00:15

Sorry @bloodywhitecat - I’m not surprised you’re worried about that.
Do look into the generator thing. A relative of mine has lifesaving equipment that she has to plug into overnight (literally plugs herself into the mains) and they have been given a generator thing to switch over to in case of power cuts.
Might help with peace of mind if you can get it in place Flowers

PupInAPram · 17/02/2022 03:53

@bloodywhitecat I'm so sorry you are having to go through that.

I work in a school for children with challenging behaviour. I am so glad it is half term and we’re off tomorrow. I don’t know what it is about the wind but they are particularly wild (and full moons).

SweetestThing · 17/02/2022 08:21

@bloodywhitecats - I posted before reading your post. I hope you get reassurance about your power supply and that your DH is as comfortable as he can be. Sending supportive thoughts to you.

lollipoprainbow · 17/02/2022 08:25

Wind makes me angry more than anything bloody hate it !!

PupInAPram · 17/02/2022 16:53

Here comes Eunice. I want to crawl under my bed and come out next Monday. 😔

Thank you for all the good wishes I have flasks ready for the baby and torches charged so I cam see DH is I need to. I have the cap for his air mattress within grabbing reach and my phone is fully charged. I have registered us for priority services and his oramorph is drawn up and ready to go should we need it.

Tigersonvaseline · 17/02/2022 21:49

I'd love it if I felt Safe but I feel extremely vulnerable.

With a massive tree directly outside the house a massive House tile loose on next doors gutter.

Two children ( thankfully) older to Keep safe.

Insurance claims are not straight forward and easy.

No family back up or safe house to retreat too.

My car is on it's last iegs but I'd get nothing for it if it's damages!
And I can't afford to replace it.

Tigersonvaseline · 17/02/2022 21:51

It's un predictable, noisy ,fast ... whipping...

BumBurnerBum · 17/02/2022 21:54

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 17/02/2022 21:55

I absolutely love it-

feels so invigorating and cleansing.

have battened down the hatches in my garden

Pixies74 · 17/02/2022 21:55

@makingitalladdup

I don't find it stressful if I'm inside but being outside in the wind make me really, really annoyed. I feel annoying thinking about how annoyed I'd be if I was outside right now. The wind is very attention seeking as weather goes.
Ha ha, this.

Wind is my worst weather, I'd prefer to be out in the rain than wind. It makes an otherwise nice Winter's day freezing cold, it annoys me when it blows in my face, when it blows things around/off tables etc, it makes walking that much extra effort, it's just annoying!

That said, I do quite like extremes of weather, and enjoy storms if I'm inside!
