A plea from a new postie

If you haven't got your door number displayed please get some stick on numbers or a sign. I have recently started working for Royal Mail. I can't believe the amount of doors without numbers on. It's so hard trying to deliver to the right doors a lot of it is guess work.

Other services must struggle too like Ambulances etc.

Thank you Star

Our house is on a normal 2,4,6,8 road but is slightly set back from the main road in a mini cul-de-sac where the numbers then loop round. To make matters worse, the numbers were just on the doors and the doors don't face the road.

The first couple of days after moving in made it clear that despite being sensibly numbered, it was almost impossible for people to find.

Shortly after moving in I bought a sign to put on a road facing wall. If it's dark and we're expecting a takeaway delivery, we always make sure the light is on and always add specific instructions about which house is ours, based on the number of the house the cul-de-sac is opposite.

We're regularly complimented by delivery drivers for doing so.

If you live somewhere that delivery drivers are often calling for directions - your signage isn't good enough!

Hope you get used to your route soon @Zingy123 - you sound like a lovely conscientious postie! We love our postie - always happy and chatty.

People struggle finding our house too 🤦🏼‍♀️we have house names, no numbers, as in the centre of a village and very old properties. It is confusing. Our house name is on a plaque on the side of the building so you can see it from the pavement, but I think we should have something on the gate as well - although the gate is access to us and next door so still could be confusing after that

Furries · 16/02/2022 14:11

@WeAreTheHeroes

We have just a house name and a house next door no one ever seems to realise exists 🙄 It's been there well over 100 years.

I'm sick of picking up elastic bands posties have dropped, very annoying and wasteful.

I used to live on the fourth floor of a block of flats in London (5 flats on each floor). Every day, when heading down the stairs, each floor’s communal hallway would have a few elastic bands.

I remember reading somewhere (may have been on MN), someone would pick them up and post them in a post box as a PA “here’s your property”.

In a block and all the houses are numbered clearly but this doesn't stop me getting people knocking on the door asking if it is No. N-2.

A few doors down had the police hammering on the door in the middle of the night when they wanted their next door neighbour

I get mail for NDN quite often, and over Christmas got two pieces of mail where only the number and street name were correct, town and postcode were not mine

@Zingy123

Yes I agree the wheelie bins are usually labelled they help. Some street designers should be shot. We have streets here with two completely different streets houses opposite each other with no street signs. It's not so bad in the daytime but it must be awful in the dark for ambulances, taxis, takeaway delivery drivers etc.
We have a similar problem. Three streets with similar names, and a block of flats named road name House. It's like they went out of their way to make it difficult. And we have had an ambulance turn up at ours that was meant for one of the others, frequently get post not for us and have so far resisted the temptation to accept somebody else's takeaway.

Home Bargains do some really crackin wheelie bin stickers that could work for house doors as well

JuliaSways · 16/02/2022 18:46

I can't believe it, after commenting earlier about having no problems with post here - got home from work to find a pile of post for someone at "21 Other Road" and we live on "21 This Road" . Have googled it and it's about half a bloody mile away!

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/02/2022 07:36

Yesterday I had a magazine delivered. With it was the same magazine addressed to my friend who lives over a mile away in the same village. I'm seeing her tonight so can just hand it to her when we meet.
