Milton spray ruined my sofa

Have I missed something on the label ?
After an operation my dog ,recovering from the anaesthetic, dribbled pee on the sofa . I grabbed the Milton spray - read the label - it said NO BLEACH - so I sprayed the sofa - and the result was bleached patches on my dark brown sofa . I emailed Milton twice but have been ignored . I don’t want compensation I want the label to say - DONT USE ON FABRIC
Has anyone got any idea how I DO get in touch with Milton ?

Oh, Milton does this. I used to work somewhere that used it and constantly had spots and stains caused by it.

It mightn't be chlorine bleach but there's some chemical in it that removes color from fabric.

gamerchick · 15/02/2022 20:13

Yeah it does that. Maybe a nice throw for your sofa.

babblingbumblingbandofbaboons · 15/02/2022 20:17

I’d hazard a guess that the back of the bottle will have a statement like “test on a small non visible area before use” for exactly this reason - it might not be bleach but plenty of products other than bleach will mark certain things. It might be safe on some fabrics, not others, with some colours, not others etc.

Chakraleaf · 15/02/2022 20:18

Yeh. I use Milton to bleach jugs and plastic bowls that go orange from beans!

MaizeAmaze · 15/02/2022 20:29

Have you smelt milton? It might not be bleach, but it is chlorine based, and yes, will damage soft surfaces.
Would you have used non bleached based kitchen cleaner on a fabric? Because it's a similar idea.
Sorry about the sofa, but sprays designed for soft furnishings, or soap, in the future.

Woahthehorsey · 15/02/2022 20:32

It isn't the chemical bleach but it does have bleaching properties - as does lots of things, such as sunlight! And it says to test a bit first!

Can you claim off your house insururqnce?

SantaHat · 15/02/2022 20:40

Normally if struggling to complain to a company I would recommend trying Twitter but in this case you’re seriously surprised that a household cleaner wasn’t suitable for use on a sofa? Seriously?

WitneyWonder · 15/02/2022 22:13

Yes , seriously . There are many household products but I wanted a disinfectant not a cleaner - I can tell the difference.

Wish I hadn’t been in such a hurry ! Wasn’t strong enough to turn the sofa over to test a bit out of sight

Thanks for the picture as it gives an address . Will have to use snail mail to contact them about the info on the label. I tried to contact via their website for speed but no joy

Haha the warning you are wanting on the label seems like a 'caution hot' on a coffee cup to me...

Doesnt need to be stated for 99.9% of the population, but the 0.1% that cant figure it out on their own kick up enough fuss that it gets added....

WitneyWonder · 16/02/2022 08:21

Thank you for your pointless comment . It doesn’t help

I wouldn't even use fairly liquid on my sofa, let alone anything else! I do think what others have said is fair. Using a product that smells like a swimming pool on a sofa is not going to end well.

NeverTouchWarmPants · 16/02/2022 08:30

TBF Milton spray hasnt ruined your sofa, you have by using it on soft furnishings
Sorry to be harsh but it wasn't made for that

Idontlikeworms · 16/02/2022 08:55

I use Milton to get rid of tea stains in mugs. You only have to smell it to realise it will bleach things.

ButterMeTimbers · 16/02/2022 08:59

For my own part, I'm not sure that on a label woukd make any difference. When looking to clean up dog pee

a) you need something with enzymes in it, specific for the pee
b) I wouldn't use anything on a sofa that didn't expcitly say was safe for that use (rather than looking for a warning it wasn't)

Just my own 2ps...

Lochroy · 16/02/2022 09:00

Yep. I've got loads of clothes which bleach spots from when I used Milton on baby items and got splashed.

I think it completely depends what warnings are (or aren't) on the bottle, but either way they should have the decency to reply. I'd message them on Twitter.

What does the back of the bottle say?

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/02/2022 09:14

Always use on small non-visible surface first.

Pretty sure it says this on the back. Can you confirm @WitneyWonder?

ShippingNews · 16/02/2022 09:24

From the Milton website - what is in Milton ? Milton Fluid is made of an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite .

Sodium hypochlorite, is commonly referred to as bleach.

LizBennet · 16/02/2022 09:26

Yeah Milton smells like bleach to me, I wouldn't have sprayed it on a soft surface.
I wouldn't have thought a warning was necessary, but there you go.

Filthyslattern · 16/02/2022 09:32

You daft haporth! Why on earth would you put it on your sofa???

WitneyWonder · 16/02/2022 09:34

Thank you for your comment . I only carried Milton as I have grandchildren and never used it before . By the time I smelt the chlorine it was too late

OP posts:
Filthyslattern · 16/02/2022 09:35

Would have put flash or cillit bang on the sofa?

WitneyWonder · 16/02/2022 09:37

Thank you FS , yours has been the only comment that has not been negative or made me feel even worse than I do . I did feel a twit but I only want added info on the label for any other inexperienced grandparents .
