Inconsiderate NDNs re noise/light

Gonnagetgoing · 14/02/2022 15:01

I live in a street where there are mostly families with kids or retired or single people.

NDN's have rented out their house to two women - at a guess in 40s/50s.

They have so far had 2 really loud parties, lots of singing, very loud music and 1 with no notice whatsoever and the other was one meant to end at 5pm but carried on until early hours of next day.

My bedroom is flush to theirs and I could easily move but I like the aspect (garden). I wouldn't mind considering moving bedroom (I have one other double bedroom and a box room) for good or even temporarily but it's the lack of notice I don't like.

I've also been told by neighbours that they've installed a sauna in one room for sex parties?! which I don't care about but they now seem to have loads of friends to come and stay in their 'party house'.

They also have lights - like fairy lights with bigger bulbs but they seem to be right across the garden that looks up into my bedroom. I already have blackout curtains.

Yes I would use earplugs etc had I known about this, yes I could use an eye mask.

My question is - should I put up with this? Previous renters with a 1 year old and 6 year old made hardly any noise and the owners had 3 kids and you barely heard a sound!

I don't see why I should have to move bedroom just because NDNs are inconsiderate. They have told me since re the noise and I think lights to tell them when they're on but I feel like a real party pooper doing this. I don't want to come across as a fun sponge.

So what would you do?

The parties were in January btw and they moved in last December (2021).

oh and the fairy lights whatever they are are right near the patio - so not down the end of the garden.

So they've had 2 parties - hardly excessive! And lots of people have garden lights, you can't really complain about those unless they have a spotlight directed straight into your window.

You are definitely coming across as a fun sponge in this thread so I am not sure what you want us to tell you.

@IsDaveThere - yes - but going from it being a family house to it being a party house is a bit of a stretch.

I've looked on other threads about this and quite a few MNers say they wouldn't be happy with parties twice a month which is why I posted it.

Plus these people have told me to tell them.

also they're renters so if I really wanted to be a bitch I'd get them evicted. Hence why asking here.

I hear loud conversations and screeching loads now!

@IsDaveThere - I might get blinds fitted anyway then. Have them downstairs the shutter type ones.

I would tell them. Noisy people know they are noisy. I'm sick of entitled people thinking they can do as they wish.

@user1471538283 - we are lucky as in a very quiet (or mostly quiet) area but it staggers me that even with the kids I rarely heard them - and it was mostly children's stuff in the garden.

will tell them.

You wouldn't be able to get them evicted just because they've had two parties in two months and have some fairy lights in their garden. The fact you are even thinking among those lines makes you unreasonable.

How about you try talking to them?

@Pontypandytaxpayer - no. 1 - I am not thinking about evicting them on the basis of 2 parties in 2 months. However I'd have liked and would give notice myself of noisy parties - surely that's polite no?

Either I be a bitch and annoy them back with loud music etc or I talk to them, which I have - briefly once, if you read OP.

They're 40/50 year old women FFS not teenagers which is why it's slightly jarring that they're so bloody loud.

How would you get them evicted? Confused

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/02/2022 17:15

Being passive aggressive is pretty childish.

cookiemonster2468 · 14/02/2022 17:18

Well here comes the standard reply to most neighbour-related questions....

Have you tried speaking to them?

cookiemonster2468 · 14/02/2022 17:19

(I saw your "once briefly", but I mean have you actually spoken to them, as in a proper conversation about the impact on you and your life, and trying to find a compromise?)

NightmareSlashDelightful · 14/02/2022 17:23

At one level, a couple of parties in two months isn't unreasonable. Although it depends what you mean by noise till the early hours -- personally, 1am I could handle with gritted teeth, 4am would be too much and I'd complain.

I do think expecting to be forewarned about parties is a bit unrealistic.

But it's also a change to the dynamic of your street so I get that it's unsettling.

As awkward as it may be, I would just keep an open dialogue with them. If a specific noise disturbs you, tell them. Appreciating the peace and quiet doesn't make you unlikeable or weird or a bad neighbour.

The way through this is probably a bit of give-and-take on both sides. You might need to accept that they're going to have gatherings every so often. They might need to accept that they need to consider you since you share a wall, and kick everyone out at (say) midnight or put the fairy lights on an auto-off switch.

Maintaining a (mostly) friendly dialogue will be easier than escalating, long-term.

How are they as neighbours more broadly? Do you like them? Are they noisy outside of the party times?

NoLongerTroels · 14/02/2022 17:30

If I was the landlord I'd be very annoyed at a Hot Tub inside the house. It'll make the place damp and moldy

Gonnagetgoing · 14/02/2022 19:23

Ok it’s not a hot tub it’s a sauna - thought I’d said that?

Evicting? I don’t want them evicted. But I don’t want cackling and singing and I don’t really want to move my bedroom - other side have a baby but she’s fairly quiet!

But they’re renting for 2 years and it is a party house. One of them is American if that makes a difference maybe they’re louder than British people?

I have spoken to them and they said they’d be quiet but then one party went On after 5 and the other was unannounced.

I don’t care if they do have gatherings but give me notice and I’ll get earplugs or move bedroom.

Actually my attic might be being converted soon so maybe I’ll just tell them to be extra noisy and rent elsewhere.

@NightmareSlashDelightful - I rarely see them. When they moved in one of them made a comment about being an army brat and said she thought the agents were lesbians as it’s two women. But no, never see them.

Maybe it’s a London or age thing but when I was younger and parents etc we all told immediate neighbours when having a party as polite no?

Posters are mentioning eviction because you said this:

Maybe reread your own posts before replying? Smile

YANBU

Gonnagetgoing · 14/02/2022 19:27

I hear the woman upstairs in the room upstairs adjoining mine which is a bit annoying but it’s her WFH office so I can put up with that. But I think she is loud. Or just doesn’t realise her voice carries.

@Pontypandytaxpayer - if I did want then evicted trust me I’d be a real bitch and find some way to get them evicted.

But like I said I don’t want them evicted and I really don’t.

But I own and they don’t.

Why the fuck can’t they do what I do and go out to bars rather than piss me off? It’s not a detached house it’s a terraced house.

You sound really unpleasant.

SeaMeat · 14/02/2022 19:32

Not nice for you OP, it's not the fact that it's only two parties, but that it's unexpected, you never know when to brace yourself.

Maybe keep up a dialogue with them and mitigate by moving your house around and try to find quiet spots, at least you'll feel more in control.

Gonnagetgoing · 14/02/2022 19:33

@Pontypandytaxpayer and you sound like an inconsiderate, renter who’s a bit entitled,

Have decided I’ll keep an eye or ear on things try and have a word but if they keep on I’ll have to either piss them off or other. I don’t want to be texting every time they do this. Maybe I’ll get a really yapping barking dog and take up opera
