Does anyone have a good microwave?

Boring, boring, I know.

I need to buy a new one after our old (rather rubbish Panasonic one) gave up the ghost. I’ve sat looking at reviews on Amazon and Argos and am still none the closer. I’m losing the will to live.

I don’t need anything more than something that can defrost, heat, fit in a dinner plate and Is tall enough for a packet of microwaveable rice.

Does anyone have one that they like and fits the bill? I will be eternally grateful!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a great microwave recommendation, we’ve recently updated our best microwaves page with lots of options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their families. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

This is the holy grail isnt it ? I bought a new one a couple of years and it is way too complicated

I would love one with two heat settings, (defrost and high power)

And a 5second, 10 second 1 minute and 10 minutes buttons.

ilovelibraries · 13/02/2022 15:48

@Oldraver yes, seems to be. I am so bored at looking. I was hopeful someone might have one like that.

I looked for two features- 1000w for speed, and a stainless steel interior. The first hasn't worked brilliantly- it's no faster than our previous one.

The second feature, stainless steel interior, is absolutely invaluable. That's where previous microwaves have always failed. Always. The new(ish) one is great. Easy to clean and wearing well.

When mine packed in recently I just bought the cheapest branded One available at Argos . At the time it was this one www.argos.co.uk/product/7911484?clickSR=slp:term:microwave%20oven:26:93:1 and it seems fine so far. They now have some that are even cheaper though.

ilovelibraries · 13/02/2022 16:23

@RandomMess I did see that one and wondered if it was really good or just got good reviews as it’s good as a compromise iykwim.

@RandomMess the microwaveable rice request was just because I’ve read reviews from microwaves where people said they couldn’t fit them in, and that seemed too low for me!

nordica · 13/02/2022 16:27

I was going to mention the rice, mine is annoyingly about an inch too low! Didn't know about that when I chose it. 😒

RandomMess · 13/02/2022 16:29

Have measured, the internal height is 15cm

Chef says he cooks the rice laid down and in several years he hasn't managed to poison us 🤣

ilovelibraries · 13/02/2022 16:44

@RandomMess I’m not 100% convinced a corner one is right for me, although I do like the idea. Are there any downsides would you say? Is it a compromise in any way?

Anyone else have one they’d recommend?

OP posts:
RandomMess · 13/02/2022 16:46

Oh if it's not right but something else.

I've found it easy to use, no corners to clean with the DC make a mess. Takes up visually and actual less space which is why I wanted it - to sit in a corner.

You can programme it in how many seconds or press the up and down in 30 second intervals.

RandomMess · 13/02/2022 16:47

I had a lovely silver combi before that. Showed every finger print and only ever used the microwave so sold it to get this one as more compact.

ilovelibraries · 13/02/2022 16:53

@RandomMess thanks so much for your views. I’m swaying back towards it Grin

But you need to microwave you rice laid down 🤣

prediction500 · 13/02/2022 17:08

I like a flatbed microwave. No plate so you get additional height for rice packets, plus as they don't rotate you can use rectangular dishes and they're easy to clean

You can also get a newer model that is 1000w

Crummles · 13/02/2022 17:12

I've got a flatbed microwave too - it's great!

Shmithecat2 · 13/02/2022 17:17

Asda, £44, does everything you want.

ilovelibraries · 13/02/2022 18:08

@Shmithecat2 do you have this model?

BoodleBug51 · 13/02/2022 18:13

We had a Miele one that I adored. It lasted 15 years and I nearly cried when it finally gave up the ghost. We replaced with a Neff one and it's entirely shit so don't recommend them at all.

Loving the idea of a flatbed one. No idea you could get them.

Shmithecat2 · 13/02/2022 18:15
@Shmithecat2 do you have this model?
Yep! Bought it as a 'it'll do for now' 2 years ago. I have no intention of replacing it any time soon!

Norugratsatall · 13/02/2022 18:17

Watching with interest as I caused a small fire in our microwave yesterday and can't get the smell of smoke out so may have to buy another. Blush

LeftieLucy · 13/02/2022 18:40

I have this one. So far so good! Fits uncles bens rice, but the best is that it beeps every minute after ending so I never forget my coffee that I’ve heated up!

I had that one too, loved it. But 2 years in storage did not do it any favours, hence why I bought my cheap asda one. It was a great microwave.
RandomMess · 13/02/2022 18:48

I like one that you select seconds rather than a vague dial.
