Meal ideas without an oven or microwave?

9 replies

Eekkeed · 12/02/2022 22:28

My oven is broken and I don’t have a microwave or toaster so only a hob to cook on, annoyingly though I also only have a saucepan no frying pan or anything
(This is just a temporary situation not long term)
All I can think of is pasta and soup, struggling to come up with any other ideas of what to feed DC (9 and 5) they do have hot dinners at school mon-Friday so we often have a smaller tea of sandwhiches etc those days anyway!

Bolognaise, stews, curry, risotto?

PinkArt · 12/02/2022 22:49

Stir fry, risotto, paella, cheese toasties can be pan fried, pan fried fish or steak with veg, omelettes, curries.
I've done pizza in a frying pan with foil on top before!

Couscous doesn't need a hob at all, just hot water - I'm guessing you just have the one ring? That makes it easier to do something on the hob at the same time.

Frying pans (well, cheap and nasty ones!) aren't expensive, so might be worth getting one. Then you can do pancakes too, and stir fries (with the couscous)

One pot meals are easy to adapt, you can cook rice or pasta first and set it to one side, then cook the rest;

Is it just one hob? (IE you can't cook two things at once and can't reheat the first one?)

Beans/spaghetti hoops on toast, boil in the bag fish and boil in the bag veggies, stew and dumplings, poached eggs or boiled eggs with toast, chilli (in pita bread)... all can be done with one hob and one saucepan!

Can you buy a frypan or look for one on olio, freecycle a charity shop etc? A steam is great because you can use 1, single hob and cook multiple things about it.

  • hot dogs. Cook them in boiling water in the saucepan
  • Hamburgers- cooked in the saucepan
  • Many supermarkets sell frozen bags of stir fry and whole meals that just need heating on the hob
  • scrambled eggs with veg and/or meat inside
