Holiday renting : from petite bourgeois to corporation

Searching my emails earlier I came across an (unrelated) exchange with a holiday apartment owner from 2011 and it struck me how different (and more expensive) the process is now. He was chuffed I'd paid by bank transfer ("most of our guests pay by cheque which is less convenient"), sent the keys through the post (he was in the UK but had a holiday apartment abroad), it was all very personal and wholesome compared with all the scammers, holiday management companies, Airbnb crapola, cancellation small print (even prior to covid) that you come across now that self catering is a massive corporatised industry. And it was so cheap! £200 for a one bedroom apartment in a quiet complex with pools and little restaurants a couple of hundred yards from the beach.

Am I just getting old or does anyone else think things have changed really dramatically in just a decade, and not for the better?

Oh gosh, even in 2019 we were having to meet the holiday home owners with cash on the day we arrived at a previously agreed upon time. I much prefer lock boxes and card payments these days.
