Anyone else frightened by what's happening in Russia?

I'm worried about this. How serious is the risk of wider conflict? What the hell is Putin playing at? Why won't China act to check Russia's aggression? How awful for Ukrainians. Please tell me anything comforting you can think of about this.

It was worse in the 80s. The government sent out leaflets detailing what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.

Marcipex · 11/02/2022 21:02

Terribly worried about Ukrainian friends.

GirlInACountrySong · 11/02/2022 21:04

i remember the 80's...the threat has always been there

I’m very worried about this and surprised more people aren’t. It seems like it’s escalating?

CovidCorvid · 19/02/2022 20:39

Definitely seems to be escalating. Putin is doing these false flag attacks now which seem to be him planning excuses to invade saying that the Ukrainians started it. Scary.

notliketheothersnotlikeanyone · 19/02/2022 20:41

I really really don’t understand it. I’ve read a lot but it still seems so strange and confusing ?

I’ve had a phobia since age 8 of nuclear war so this is doing wonders for my anxiety 🤦‍♀️

ListenLinda · 21/02/2022 21:19

I’m starting to get worried.
Any knowledgeable people out there would give best case worst case scenario?

Best case, worst case scenario is that Russia invades like they did with Crimea. There’s local casualties (obviously still bad) but things settle down and part of eastern Ukraine becomes Russia. Other countries complain loudly, maybe do some sanctions for a bit but then remember we need gas/oil and people stop talking about it. 🤷‍♀️

I mean no other countries seem to be holding Russia to account for Crimea so guess it’s possible.

blueshoes · 21/02/2022 22:40

Unfortunately, it does not end with Ukraine. China is watching the western world's reaction and might be emboldened to do a land grab of its own if Russia gets off with just rhetoric and a slap on the wrist.

CovidCorvid · 21/02/2022 22:56

China already grabbed Tibet and nobody did anything.

I don’t know what the answer is. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it but realistically what is going to be done? We’re never going to bomb or attack Russia!

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/02/2022 22:58

"God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference."

Why worry? You cannot change anything.

AmbushedByTheCake · 21/02/2022 23:04

China and Russia are in a sense the new world order. We wait and see and sanction.

Tigersonvaseline · 21/02/2022 23:06

I loathe Putin and what he has robbed Russia of.
Freedoms, democracy, money ect and now he is going too get innocent people killed.
I can't see the people of Russia being happy about this at all.

LoveFall · 22/02/2022 00:11

After today's events, I just feel very sad and actually quite angry. So many lies and such ridiculous posturing. So much harm being done, and for what?

chicagononsense · 22/02/2022 07:11

Forgive me if I’m wrong here but is Putin doing this just because he wants to? What’s his reasoning?

Fear that too much of Eastern Europe is becoming ‘western side’ and being part of NATO, some disagreement there. Also Ukraine is a good for resources and a good ‘way in’ to the rest of former soviet Europe (my fear).
Radyward · 22/02/2022 07:23

Its all about the gas pipeline to europe and money. Europe is increasinglly dependemt on rissian supply and less so on american energy supply. Biden has to look like a fully functining strong leader so its a bit of posturing and faux strength on the usa part to deflect from issues on bidens own turf
Coviid / energy prices / crime. Its all deglection on Bidens part and no one really gives a jot about ukraime . In actual fact
i read that many ukrisnians over 50 woukd prefer to join russia. Dont know how true tthat is ! I am finding it hare to believe the media putin bad ( i knoe he is ) biden good. Will ukraine become governed by us troops and us puppets if war goes ahead. I doubt any citizen wants this when.looking at iraq

. Its ALL about energy baby

notimagain · 22/02/2022 07:53

@Radyward

Any thoughts on Putin’s announcement last night and how that fits in with this supposedly all being about Biden and being “ALL about energy baby”?
