Would you go to minor injuries with this?

Sorry I usually hate these threads but I'm really in two minds

DS landed awkwardly in football training weds night, couldn't weight bear thurs morning but needed to be in college so I dropped him off at the gate instead of his usual walk and he hobbled through the day. By end of college it was okay enough that he told me not to worry about picking him up and he got the bus home with a short walk from bus stop.

Today he is weight bearing and seemed fine this morning but I've just asked to have a look at it and it's still so swollen! He says it feels really tender

So wise mumsnetters should I brave minor injury unit or does this look like a standard sprain that'll sort itself out (he's been wearing a tubular bandage and took ibuprofen the first night)

Would you go to minor injuries with this?

I think as he is weight bearing that there isn't much they would actually do?

Think it looks like it needs ice and elevated-but probably not A&E on a friday night

TheCanyon · 11/02/2022 19:37

It's hard to tell really but I'd never ever mess about with an ankle and would want it seen just incase.

givemeallthecheese · 11/02/2022 19:37

That's my initial thought too @mumsiedarlingrevolta
In fact yesterday after college I was harping on "thank goodness we didn't waste hours in a&e!"
But the bruising just threw me this evening

I'd be tempted to make him rest it tonight, keep it elevated and with a bag of frozen peas on it. Also some ibuprofen may help.

If it's still swollen in the morning, I'd get it checked.

itsoveritshard · 11/02/2022 19:41

The bruising looks like it's reaching right to his toes, the swelling and site of bruising does sound like ligament/tendon damage and it's good he's weight bearing but there are so many small bones in the foot/ankle that I'd be getting it checked out. If you have a minor injuries dept that do X-rays I'd go along for a visit.

LefttoherownDevizes · 11/02/2022 19:42

That looks like a sprain (torn ligaments) but tbh as he can weight best I don't think they'd even x-ray, and so they'd just send you home. Not even crutches if her can use it.

I did mine recently and they did give me crutches as I couldn't bear weight but that was it. No bandages or anything.

Rest, elevate, ice and Google ankle ligament exercises to try and ensure good healing/moment. The treatment for turn ligaments is to move, opposite of breaks.

Hope he's better soon

I walked into a&e with an ankle that had been sore for a few days. No massive swelling, no bruising Broken ankle and foot, I spent 12 weeks in plaster
CrinklyCraggy · 11/02/2022 19:45

I know two people who walked around on broken ankles for several days. One actually ran a half marathon on it, so yes, I'd get that checked out, being able to bear weight doesn't tell you much.

Here you need to go to A&E if you'll need an xray though, minor injuries doesn't do them

AndSoFinally · 11/02/2022 19:47

Look up Otowa Ankle Rules and see how he scores. They might XRay even if he's weight bearing, but there would have to be pain over certain points when they examine him. Is there pain? Is it getting better or worse?

They won't do much about a small broken bone in the foot though. I speak from experience.

I did something to my ankle witch looked very similar but I didn’t go to hospital and it took months to heal, I’m sure it was torn ligaments, there’s nothing they can do but at least I’d have had expert advise rather than literally hobbling along for many months. Take him tomorrow when it will be quieter than tonight.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/02/2022 20:20

Soft tissue injuries can be more serious than a fracture and need more treatment/physio.

There's a lot that can be done right up to and including (if necessary) surgery.

It needs checking.

Sideswiped · 11/02/2022 20:25

I'd go to a minor injuries unit /A&E to get that X-rayed. The level of bruising shows that there is significant injury even if there isn't a break, so at the very least he needs a diagnosis and treatment plan.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 11/02/2022 20:31

My DS was weight bearing his leg, but I just knew there was something wrong.

Got to x-ray and he'd broken his ankle.

Get him checked out.

tumtitum · 11/02/2022 21:42

Definitely get it checked, I've also known people to weight bare on broken ankles and torn Achilles' tendons!
