Shaken not stirred?

Randomly wondering. Does it make a difference to taste? Can you tell the difference? Or was James Bond just being precious?

I don't drink so wouldn't know.

Rule of thumb is:

Alcohol forward drinks should be stirred whereas those that contain other ingredients should be shaken.

An interesting study was conducted by UWO in Canada which said that shaken martinis contain more antioxidants than their stirred counterparts.

That IS interesting, thank you!

I was listening to a podcast recently that said at the time the novels were written, it would have been very gauche to request a martini shaken not stirred and Fleming wrote the character to show that he wasn't nearly as sophisticated as the impression he wanted to give.

What is an "alcohol forward drink"?

I can't even work out what that might be a typo/autocorrect for.

Alcohol only?

It's when the drink is just a spirit with a small amount of vermouth or fortified wine added, which is then stirred. I never knew this, just found it on this website www.seriouseats.com/cocktail-style-guide-categories-of-cocktails-glossary-families-of-drinks#toc-spirit-forward-cocktails

@longtompot Thank you!

I should have just googled but foolishly assumed it was a typo.

That'll teach me Grin

To quote the fabulous Jed Bartlet ...

President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet: Can I tell you what's messed up about James Bond?

Charlie Young: Nothing.

President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet: Shaken, not stirred, will get you cold water with a dash of gin and dry vermouth. The reason you stir it with a special spoon is so not to chip the ice. James is ordering a weak martini and being snooty about it.

@Parpophone I have a misspent youth as a bartender and now I enjoy a good drink. Learned all the lingo and @longtompot has it right.

@Whitney168 fab quote. One of my fave shows.

@DazedandConcerned

I didn't think there were many gaps in my alcohol knowledge, but clearly this was one of them Grin

I fully intend to work the phrase "alcohol forward" into conversation at the earliest opportunity!

DazedandConcerned · 10/02/2022 16:37

@Parpophone Do it!! Grin

I thought that the books said "stirred not shaken" and that was a metaphor for his emotions. They changed it for the films as it sounded better...
