Fill me full of your favourite facts. The more obscure, the better!

My favourite all time fact is that two halves of a supermarket sandwich are never from the same sandwich and are each another half of another pair. Unbelievable.

I met a grown man who didn't know peanuts grew underground recently too, which pleased me.

Enlighten me further!

@MissMaple82

It is impossible to hum whilst holding your breath.

I can though.

Or do you mean, like with your mouth and nose shut/closed off?

GREAT thread btw. Thank you @GlitterSquid

Your foot is the same size as the distance from your elbow to your wrist

@Tempusfudgeit

Woolly mammoths still walked the Earth whilst the pyramids were being built.
Seriously???????

@Awwlookatmybabyspider

Not a fact as such because it's common knowledge, but fascinating non the less. People born simultaneously can have different Birthdays due to Time Zones.

ALSO, there is the occasion (that happened a couple of months ago,) of twins being born not only on different days, but in different YEARS! Shock

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/jan/03/twins-born-minutes-apart-born-two-different-years

This is rare but it does happen occasionally.

The only false fact I remember from the entire book was that penguins are magnetic, so if you spin them round three times, they always face North.

Grin LOL!!!!!

@MajesticallyAwkward

Sharks have been around longer than Saturn's rings. Sharks date back around 450 million years while Saturn's rings are at most 100 million years old. Sharks also predate dinosaurs and trees!
Shock OMG!

I am also reeling from mammoths being around when the pyramids started being built. I thought 'haha bullshit' but it's TRUE! Mammoths were around just 4000 years ago, the same time (roughly) as the pyramids would have started!

I am going to bed soon, but am getting up in the morning and writing some of these down!

That nearly all of us can, quite easily, tell the difference between hot and cold water being poured

I fill and boil the kettle when I start work and mid-morning when my colleague comes in she pours it into her mug and sometimes I say "Kettle needs boiling" and sometimes I don't. She always sips it and wants to know how the hell I know when it's too cold. I just shrug but it's because it sounds different. Don't tell her, she thinks I'm psychic!

The words 'garden', 'yard' and 'horticulture' all come from the same Indo European root word.

Koalas were hunted to near extinction at the beginning of the last century, estimated 4 million killed for pelts and because they were seen as pests.

Now 30% of the current population carry a degenerative kidney disease gene inherited from a single koala as the gene pool was so small when conservation groups tried to breed the species back

Over 50% of all numbers begin with 1

When written out as words, the first number to contain the letter 'a' is 'A hundred' (or 'hundred And one', depending on whether you use the indefinite article for hundred).

When counting from zero in English, using 'standard' mouth pronunciation patterns, the first time your lips will touch is when you reach "a/one Million".

I have two facts that I love. First, that my eggs that my two DC came from were formed when I was inside my own mums womb! A baby girl is born with all her eggs already in place for the future. Second one, you can age a fish by counting the rings on one of its scales, like rings on a tree. Fascinating!

The only false fact I remember from the entire book was that penguins are magnetic, so if you spin them round three times, they always face North.

I can forgive almost any false fact as long as it is hilarious!!

I know two false facts about Bob Holness and one true one.

  1. He played the saxophone solo in Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' (invented rumour by music journalist Stuart Maconie, which spread like wildfire).
  2. He invented the all-day breakfast (asserted during an early WILTY-style game sung to the tune of Jimmy Nail's 'Ain't No Doubt' on an episode of Radio 2's fantastic 'Jamming' programme with Rowland Rivron - sadly made up, though).
  3. He was the second actor to play James Bond (true - in a radio production of Moonraker).
