All restrictions to end this month?

Just saw this on breaking news.

That’s it - no more restrictions. Everything back to normal.

I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Where did you see this?

DSGR · 09/02/2022 12:26

I feel fine about it, we’ve vaccinated as much as we can, serious illness has dropped off a cliff (for the vaccinated) and Covid is never going to go away. It will kill a tiny % of the population for many years to come. We do have to live with it

  1. Nothing to stop people continuing to take their own precautions if they're worried/vulnerable.
  1. Has no effect on what restrictions other countries may wish to keep/impose on UK residents wishing to travel to their country.

Boris in PMQ.
No details.

DSGR · 09/02/2022 12:27

It’s on Prime Minister’s Questions.. now reported on Sky/BBC

Auntieobem · 09/02/2022 12:27

I think it makes sense. More harm is being caused by isolation than xovid just now. I imagine that restrictions could return if there are new more harmful variants? We don't isolate for flu e.g.

Idontlikeworms · 09/02/2022 12:29

Will testing stop now?

Hb12 · 09/02/2022 12:29

Sounds good to me, especially as you can catch it more than once.

ElleGB · 09/02/2022 12:33

I do think it’s time.

Like a PP said, those who are worried can still take precautions. I wonder how that would work in the workplace - if you have symptoms you can go to work if you’re feeling well enough I imagine. If someone vulnerable wanted to avoid this colleague would they be able to work from home? Would they be penalised for not going in? Just musings.

I didn’t think this day would ever come, it’s been a long two years.

We’re off to Copenhagen. No need to test going in, just need to be vaccinated.

Watercoloursky · 09/02/2022 12:39

It was in PMQs - this is from the Guardian:

Johnson says government wants to end isolation rules a month early, at end of February

Boris Johnson starts by saying on the Monday after the half term recess he will announce a strategy for living with Covid.

He says the government intends to end the last restrictions, including isolating requirements, a full month early.

The isolation rules were due to end on 24 March.

UPDATE: Johnson said:

It is my intention to return on the first day after the half-term recess to present our strategy for living with Covid.

Provided the current encouraging trends in the data continue, it is my expectation that we will be able to end the last domestic restrictions - including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive - a full month early.

Christ, what on earth is he trying to distract us from this time?

Justcallmebebes · 09/02/2022 12:43

I've just seen this too. So bloody happy

Mariposista · 09/02/2022 12:43

I will be popping open a bottle of fizz the this day finally comes - never thought we would see it! Long live freedom!!!

GrandPrix · 09/02/2022 12:44

Yay!

hopeishere · 09/02/2022 12:44

England only though! Pity those in the nations!!

ElleGB · 09/02/2022 12:45

Funny isn’t it, now he’s firmly under the spotlight.

He must think we’re stupid.

I am pleased though. Can’t wait to tell my children

This makes me feel really emotional. Wow what we’ve all been through. And here we are.

I know lots of people will feel weird about it as we’ve had to face our own health in a way many of us haven’t. But for my teens I am hugely relieved.

Newgirls · 09/02/2022 12:47

Although can’t bear boris.

Maybe he will piss off after he’s made this announcement

DockOTheBay · 09/02/2022 12:48

Sounds good to me.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/02/2022 12:49

Sorry, this will no doubt make me look incredibly thick but what restrictions do we still currently have?

The only thing I can see that is different to my life pre-Covid is that I have to wear a mask whenever I go to the doctors/hospital. Everything else is back to normal (for me) unless I've been ignoring something!

It’s been horrific hasn’t it? I can’t even think about those first few months; the fear I felt. Lockdowns we’re really hard on my mental health too, as I’m sure they were for many.

We have waited so long for this day.

I'm in Scotland and really hope Nicola follows suit although she probably won't. I hate Boris, like any sane person does, but it's time now to move on.

No compulsory isolation even if confirmed positive is the main thing I think.

Yes seems so

Really great news
