Mu parents have bought 48 tins of tuna

It was on offer at a discount store, worked out about 50p a tin.

These are not poor people. One of their biggest concerns is inheritance tax (I say fgs spend it!)

They don't even like tuna much, but have been back for another 48 tins.

This absolutely will not be wasted. They will plough their way through 96 tins of tuna that they don't enjoy, just to be thrifty, which they don't need to be.

They've always been ones for stocking up when the price is good - in then70s they would buy a whole cow from the butcher for the freezer, but surely this is ridiculous?

What's more, I mentioned that we actually get through quite a bit of tinned tuna because it's about the only thing DS2 likes in a sandwich and they didn't even offer me a pallet Grin

Do you have examples of extreme and unnecessary thrift? I like a bargain, I'd stock up if it was something I enjoyed, but when you don't?

Maybe this is their way of spending so their estate falls under the IHT threshold!

whatisheupto · 07/02/2022 20:05

Mine spoil every trip out with the misery that is having to pay a parking fee. They are not at all hard up but would rather barely ever go out to their lovely market town than pay two pounds to park.

Oh god the parking thrift! So depressing.

Maybe they could get a cat OP

bizzieb33 · 07/02/2022 20:06

Guilty of doing the same!
48 cans for £14.99 makes each tin cost just over 32p per can, now every week will be a tuna week...

RagzRebooted · 07/02/2022 20:07

Is 50p a tin cheap for tuna now?

Lol. No IHT but a shipping container full of tuna

That's more like it! Where did you get your tuna mountain?
LoopyDream · 07/02/2022 20:10

Me thinking 50p a tin is expensive 😂

Indoorcamping · 07/02/2022 20:10

Missing the point a bit....but what shop was this?

We get through a lot of tuna.

CrinklyCraggy · 07/02/2022 20:10

@RagzRebooted

Is 50p a tin cheap for tuna now?
83p for Tesco own brand or 4 for £3

Grin They won’t be eating it - that’s your, or possibly your son’s, inheritance … (Awfully grabby of you to want it ahead of time!)

Must say I’d be quite tempted to emulate your parents with the tins, if I stumbled upon such a bargain. (Provided every shred of fish was hand-dived for and brought to the surface in its own softly lined little bed.) I’m not mad about tinned tuna, but it would give me a nice safe feeling against the next pandemic. Pah! to being number 9 million and eleventy seven in the Ocado queue …

CrinklyCraggy · 07/02/2022 20:13

Oh it will be eaten. They never, ever waste food. Dad eats the fat others have cut off their chop!

My sister found 14 boxes of man size tissues and 10 tubes of toothpaste (all unopened) when clearing out our parents' flat after Dad died. They were also very partial to large stocks of tinned tomatoes (I think I may have inherited that tendency!)

harriethoyle · 07/02/2022 20:19

Completely missing the point but I'm going to lidl tomorrow to look for this deal!

isthismylifenow · 07/02/2022 20:19

I do love a bargain amd have a decent stockpile of random items, usually from when a price was wrong. But 96 tins of tuna. Even that is a step too far I think.

My parents used to buy a whole cow when we were kids. We had a huge chest freezer. They would also buy cold drinks by the crate. So I think it's just in me to scope for a good deal.

Just think of all the great tuna dishes you will be offered when you visit OP😂

peridito · 07/02/2022 20:20

If we were out and I suggested stopping for a cup of coffee or tea ,my mum would always look at me in bewilderment and say "but we can have a drink at home ",

lljkk · 07/02/2022 20:21

Tuna is fairly healthy food.
Not a hill worth dying on.

Cherrysoup · 07/02/2022 20:21

My parents used to buy catering tins of beans/lentils on their booze cruises to France. I never did find out what they did with them but they were never in the house when I visited. Utter bonkers. My dad used to make fat and bone curry, literally lumps of bone with fat attached. Foul, but very cheap! He’d rather drink cheap vinegar like wine from big plastic jugs than spend a couple more euro on decent stuff. He was not poor!

isthismylifenow · 07/02/2022 20:22

But then again you get tinned tuna and tinned tuna. If it's the cheap stuff, I hope they have a cat. I have just realised I may be a tuna snob.

clary · 07/02/2022 20:22

When I was young, Fairy Liquid was on some kind of offer locally (? cheap? Green Shield stamps? who knows) and my dad legendarily bought 32 bottles of it. I imagine it took my parents a while to get through it.

I love a tuna sandwich actually but now DD is veggie we rarely seem to eat it. So I better not head to Lidl for that deal.

Classica · 07/02/2022 20:22

'We've snagged a great deal here, Marjorie'
'We have indeed, Roy. What a bargain'
'How's your tuna sandwich?'
'Revolting'
'Will we have the same again tomorrow and for the next 47 days?'
'Oh yes'

RJnomore1 · 07/02/2022 20:22

I hate to break it to then but 4 for £3 is 75p a tin…
