Mu parents have bought 48 tins of tuna

It was on offer at a discount store, worked out about 50p a tin.

These are not poor people. One of their biggest concerns is inheritance tax (I say fgs spend it!)

They don't even like tuna much, but have been back for another 48 tins.

This absolutely will not be wasted. They will plough their way through 96 tins of tuna that they don't enjoy, just to be thrifty, which they don't need to be.

They've always been ones for stocking up when the price is good - in then70s they would buy a whole cow from the butcher for the freezer, but surely this is ridiculous?

What's more, I mentioned that we actually get through quite a bit of tinned tuna because it's about the only thing DS2 likes in a sandwich and they didn't even offer me a pallet Grin

Do you have examples of extreme and unnecessary thrift? I like a bargain, I'd stock up if it was something I enjoyed, but when you don't?

Anyone saying the Lidl tuna is shit or only good for cats there are two offers- 48 tins of chunks for £14.99 (if you’re buying the chunks then what do you expect) or drained steak for £19.99. I bought the drained steak in ‘brine’ (there’s no liquid to speak of) and it’s excellent! Top notch and I would normally choose spring water. I’m so pleased and relieved.

my neighbour hates tinned tuna for herself but uses it to hide the dewormer for her cats.

I stock up in whatever I use when its on sale or offer. I did take a photo of my skin/hair/cleaning products stash but you would all judge me GrinGrin

@Dnaltocs

We work hard for our money. We saved hard and are mortgage free. I hear some saying they have big mortgages or high rents or can’t afford whatever - but still have coffee out daily buy their sandwiches and everything they buy is the best. If you don’t save then you can’t have. Tuna if it’s cheap, we’ll why not!
Yeah, thanks for that Kirstie! Anyway OP, about this whole cow from the butcher's....

Years ago when our kids were little DH worked with a guy who ran a small holding. One weekend we took the kids up to see the new piglets.

Fast forward a few months and DH comes home with a plastic bag, proudly telling me he's bought me a gift. He'd come home with a bloody pig.

As i couldn't bring myself to eat something I was on first name terms with I gave it to my Mother In Law 😂

I think buying a whole animal for the freezer was quite common in the 70s. Chest freezers had just become mainstream and people were still cooking from scratch and knew what to do with all the cheaper bits of a cow.

They didn't put the cow whole in the freezer. The butcher cut it up however you wanted it Grin

Friends of mine used to buy half a pig. You get shoulder joint, leg joint, chops, belly pork, fillet, offal, option to have some of it as sausages, and you could have the cheeks, trotters, head if you wanted, all butchered so ready to cook.

I'd like to buy a whole or half lamb, but we've never got enough room in the freezer.

But I thought cheaper cuts had had a bit of a revival. The price of lamb shanks etc has certainly increased a lot over the last few years.

OMG if I had the space, I would buy half a lamb! It wouldn’t take that long to eat either.

isthismylifenow · 09/02/2022 14:42

Until recently I used to buy a whole lamb. It's was cut and packed as you chose. A friend's sister had a farm, so it was a lot cheaper than normal. She sold the farm and now I no longer have lamb much as its too bloody expensive.

I have a quite embarrassing stockpile of toiletries and cleaning stuff. I did have 24 bottles of head and shoulders shampoo, I have at least 20 face washes, bar soap, liquid soap, body lotion. It will all eventually get used. I have a teen dd....

One of our shops does really good end of range clearances, so when I go there I have a beady eye on every shelf to look for the red sticker. I do love that sticker. The only problem with this, it's a bit of a standing joke now. If I buy something I haven't tried before food wise.... If I find a bargain and only buy one, it's always amazing. But if I buy multiple amounts, it's always shit.

I will somehow use up the 5 bottles of cinnamon sugar I still have. They were free, so I got them, kept some and donated some.

Today's find was 5 bottles of Bastite dry shampoo for less then the price of one. Finding a bargain brings me a lot of joy. BlushSmile

I'm isolating and gutted I'm missing this bargain! Grin

Shrove Tuesday - pancake day - is 1st March this year. I always have cinnamon sugar with my pancakes but make it myself, I didn't know you can buy it ready made.

Half a lamb doesn’t take up nearly as much space as you think in a freezer.

We’ve just bought half a pig and even that has fitted into about two freezer drawers, although we had loads of sausages to find a space for too.

isthismylifenow cinnamon sugar in banana sandwiches or make French toast and sprinkle it on the top - yum!
