Mu parents have bought 48 tins of tuna

It was on offer at a discount store, worked out about 50p a tin.

These are not poor people. One of their biggest concerns is inheritance tax (I say fgs spend it!)

They don't even like tuna much, but have been back for another 48 tins.

This absolutely will not be wasted. They will plough their way through 96 tins of tuna that they don't enjoy, just to be thrifty, which they don't need to be.

They've always been ones for stocking up when the price is good - in then70s they would buy a whole cow from the butcher for the freezer, but surely this is ridiculous?

What's more, I mentioned that we actually get through quite a bit of tinned tuna because it's about the only thing DS2 likes in a sandwich and they didn't even offer me a pallet Grin

Do you have examples of extreme and unnecessary thrift? I like a bargain, I'd stock up if it was something I enjoyed, but when you don't?

@harriethoyle

Completely missing the point but I'm going to lidl tomorrow to look for this deal!
Me too!!

@isthismylifenow

But then again you get tinned tuna and tinned tuna. If it's the cheap stuff, I hope they have a cat. I have just realised I may be a tuna snob.
Me too, except I only like the tuna in EV olive oil, in the glass jars... Cheap tuna smells too much like cat food.

My DGM was shocking for this but she lived through the war. She had a stock of everything just in case any of us (we all had our own homes) wanted something.

I want a pantry in my next house that will be well stocked because I'm sick of buying groceries.

KatherineJaneway · 07/02/2022 20:32

I'd buy that ☺️ Tuna can be used in salads, soups or stews. I use it a lot

BigSandyBalls2015 · 07/02/2022 20:36

MIL is elderly and very infirm these days. She’s loaded and could afford cabs/Uber’s but is horror struck at such frivolity and waste. So she drags herself to the shops and hobbles back … resulting in pain for days.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 07/02/2022 20:36

Tuna soup 😳🤢

QOD · 07/02/2022 20:38

They should only eat it 2 to 3 times a week due to Mercury or some such

Me too. We buy the cat a tin of the cheap stuff each month as a treat.

Lidl has tuna steak on offer last week!!! Absolute bargain at 50p a tin x

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 07/02/2022 20:42

They are my heros! My ambition is to need to shop about once a year because I have stocked up. Until I live in a bigger house it aint going to happen but hey, you gotta have a dream.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 07/02/2022 20:43

I considered buying it for DP who eats tuna & sweetcorn pasta like a student but it’s only in brine or oil and he prefers spring water 🙄

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/02/2022 20:45

I was going to ask if they had a cat lol

2bazookas · 07/02/2022 20:46

Our dog ate a tin of oily fish everyday; good for his bones and his coat.

PlanetNormal · 07/02/2022 20:49

I saw these at Lidl. Pallets of the stuff. People were loading up their trolleys with cases of tuna, I assumed they were buying them because they ran catering businesses, not that they were retired couples buying for themselves.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 07/02/2022 20:49

Hahaha my parents are pretty similar. My dad would get up and drive us to the airport at 3am to avoid us spending £20 on a taxi!

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 07/02/2022 20:53

48 tins for £15 got to be lidl brought some myself over the weekend.
My parents are always well stocked but even I had to raise an eyebrow when during the first lockdown when I was asked by my parents to get them some more loo roll when they had 46 rolls for just the 2 of them and we were down to 8 for a family of 5

asfuckedascanbe1224 · 07/02/2022 20:53

Is it tuna steak or chunks? It makes a massive difference GrinBlush

diddl · 07/02/2022 20:54

I love tuna!

Did they buy 48 tins at a time?

That must have just about cleared the shelf!

Fedupofballs · 07/02/2022 20:54

Guilty of buying 96 cans too (48 steaks and 48 in brine). The kids love it for lunches.

hartof · 07/02/2022 20:54

I ate a tin of tuna from Lidl once and had a very very poorly tummy 🤢

diddl · 07/02/2022 20:56

Oh blimey-I've just realised that that's the offer isn't it?

48 tins for 15GBPBlush

Even less that 50p!

Where does one keep 96 tins of tuna?

Tinned tuna doesn’t count as oily fish, though.
PermanentTemporary · 07/02/2022 20:57

When my uncle died he had racks of cheap wine he'd bought for a couple of quid a bottle for various deals in the house. It had all gone off. What a joyless waste.

BitterTits · 07/02/2022 21:00

Ugh. Cheap tuna tastes absolutely rotten.
