How would you expect a washing machine to last?

Userno263647284 · 07/02/2022 12:00

exactly that.

My old machine, a beko lasted 6 years. It didn't completely stop working but had faults so bought a new one - a Samsung eco bubble type.

The Samsung is just over 3 years old and gone wrong, won't work at all.

Surely they are meant to last longer than this?

Keep getting told it'll probably be cheaper to buy new than fix.

they do get heavy use with two kids with sen and a busy household

I think the manufactures work on hours used. I am on my 2nd Miele, my first one had a fault so I called the Miele man out. They plug their pc into the machine to test the fault and also record the hours. At the time I had used 18 000 hours and the lifespan is 20 000 hours (or something to that effect). So I decided to repair instead of replace the machine and it carried on working for a good few years thereafter. When it had another fault some years later, it wasn't worth the repair. But it was 22 years old and had done a few thousand hours over its expected lifespan. That machine washed two babies worth of reusable nappies. I have another one now, I think this one has a 10 year warranty, whereas the previous one was longer iirc.

In between parting with my 1st miele and getting my 2nd I thought I'd go cheapier and bought a Samsung ecobubble. What a disappointment. It took forever to wash and the clothes did not come out nearly as clean as my trusty 22 year old. So I sold that after a few weeks and got the 2nd miele. I don't even know what possessed me to try something else.

But peace is restored again.

I would say 2 years for a £200 machine, 4 years for a £400 machine etc.

I'm sorry to sound like an old crone but they don't make them like they used to. My dad has a 30 year old machine still going.

15 years with mine, and it’s been worked very hard. I think it’s a Zanussi.

We were told by our repair person to buy Bosch or Miele for washing machines.
They also told us to check John Lewis as they price match and often have much longer warranties.
Our Bosch from John Lewis has a 10 year warranty as it was on offer at the time. Cost us £650 which was a bit more than we wanted to spend but worth it for the warranty.

My hotpoint lasted 4 years which I wasn't impressed with! We got it fixed the first time it broke which cost £90, then something else went so we bought a new one - a Samsung eco bubble!! 😳 Next time I'm getting an Ebac. Hadn't heard of them until after I'd bought the Samsung, but they are a UK company, get a 7 year warranty as standard, and they are built to be repaired. Let's hope I get at least 5 years out the Samsung!

I am genuinely shocked at the general consensus. I average a new one every 4 years.

I'm obviously abusing them and not looking after them enough !!

My grandparents would say the same. Not so much my mum, she breaks everything 😅

I abuse mine by the amount I wash but the machines themselves are looked after! But 🤷‍♀️

I don't think we are alone on it. My mother has bad probably had 4-5 or so in the last 10 years!! She goes through them lkke there's no tomorrow. Problem is she will but a 5kg because it's cheap but with 5 people in her house including teens, she will over stuff it and break them!!!

Hoping to go for 10kg this time. Samsung was a 9kg!

Another Samsung owner here. We have had ours repaired at least 3 times under the 5 year warranty. It has never been the same since the first time it broke. Once it is out of warranty we will replace rather than repair. We are heavy users being a family of 6.

newyeardelurker · 07/02/2022 20:49

Lg direct drive, has a 10 year warranty. Just approaching 10 years old, no issues yet.

Baboutheocelot · 07/02/2022 20:55

I must have got lucky, I have a Samsung ecobubble which is 8 and a half years old. And I live in a very hard water area. It’s a washer dryer but I stopped using the dryer a few years ago when we moved and had space for a dryer, I wonder if that’s made the difference.

Thewindsofchange · 07/02/2022 23:03

Just had our repairman out today for our 14yo Bosch. It's still working but needs tinkering.
He said will only recommend Bosch or maybe beko. He said he would expect to get 15-20 years from a Bosch and 9 ish years from a beko. Although he did concede that ours has much higher than normal usage.

@rainrainraincamedowndowndown

My washing machine is very old. Relatively cheap Hotpoint. Bought it around the time my dc was born, so almost 14 years old. Use it very often, like every other day or more. Still working totally fine, no problem at all. I do regular maintenance wash and keep it clean, that maybe the reason or not, I don't know.
Often?

My ecobubble lasted 5 years at 4+ washes per day...

Normally get samsung as they generally have 5 years parts and labour.

My previous top of the range hotpoints lasted no more than 2 years.

EBearhug · 07/02/2022 23:46

My Bisxh is about 16 years so far. Don't Miele make theirs the most repairable? I'd only go Bosch or Miele next time.

EBearhug · 08/02/2022 00:18

Er, Bosch, that should have said...

Holothane · 08/02/2022 00:20

My Zanusi cost me £600 10 years ago I’ve got it insured still works very well, mind I’m always boil wash clean out calgon tablets every wash.

Singlebutmarried · 08/02/2022 00:24

AEG lasted 2 years. Was just out of warranty and had a sealed drum so you couldn’t change the bearings. Will never have another one.

Gone back to Beko. This one is now a year old, only got rid of our old one because we bought a new kitchen (hence the AEG). The dishwasher (also AEG) broke after 2 years also. Again replaced with Beko.

superoz · 08/02/2022 00:40

Miele here. Our 10 year warranty expires this month. Last July it tripped the electrics whenever it started a cycle - so heating element had to be replaced. Then the electronics board got fried during the replacement.
First repair man mixed up all the programs on the machine after fixing, so had to get Miele to send someone else out to reprogram again. Fortunately I’ve now been given a lot more wash programs than originally!

All in all, 3 visits to sort out and it would have cost us the equivalent of buying a new machine if we didn’t have the warranty.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/02/2022 00:54

15 years with mine, and it’s been worked very hard. I think it’s a Zanussi.

Not a washer, but we eventually had to say Goodbye to our Zanussi tumble dryer a few months ago, which my parents bought around 25 years ago (had had one minor repair in that time).

I was trying to remember when we bought our Bosch WM, as it still looks and works pretty much like new, in spite of reasonable regular usage. I realised that we bought it in early 2014. Hasn't had any faults or needed any repairs at all - apart from, soon after purchase, us having to find the secret code on YouTube to stop it from beeping at you every single minute after the cycle has finished until you drop what you're doing and rush and attend to it Grin
