How would you expect a washing machine to last?

Userno263647284 · 07/02/2022 12:00

exactly that.

My old machine, a beko lasted 6 years. It didn't completely stop working but had faults so bought a new one - a Samsung eco bubble type.

The Samsung is just over 3 years old and gone wrong, won't work at all.

Surely they are meant to last longer than this?

Keep getting told it'll probably be cheaper to buy new than fix.

they do get heavy use with two kids with sen and a busy household

We've got the same machine and it came with a 5 year parts warranty. We've had them out twice as the door catch stopped working- common fault apparently.
The second time I rang samsung I had to go through a video tutorial with their operator to try and fix it. It didn't work so they sent someone.

I think you need to press them more.
We had a zanussi that lasted 17 years and many, many washes and 2 house moves but they're all microchip controls now and built to go wrong!

FredtheCatsMum · 07/02/2022 18:05

Mine had better last 20 years. 7 so far with no problems. Its a Miele.

Nsky · 07/02/2022 18:17

Piggyk2
I buy a new machine when I need to, tho if you use yours excessively it won’t last as long.
Only cat and I here, as yes I budget to replace a budget one every 3 yrs, my Hisense had 2 yr warranty, I hate it tho, start saving after warranty.
If a £600 then I’d take insurance out after warranty

We spoke to them last night, did a video call. They gave us details of their third party repairman but obviously we would have to pay but pushed buying a new one more with 25 percent off! 🤯

@Userno263647284 the repair man that came out to our Samsung recommended a beko. Our heat pump dryer is a beko and we've had that a few years and I'm really impressed. It was a which? Best Buy (which I only did for a while after the disastrous Samsung).

Roselilly36 · 07/02/2022 18:30

@Fujimora

We have a 20 year old Miele that is still going strong.
Wow that’s a super recommendation. I hope the Bosch machine I bought recently will last as long, probably not though, very high tech washer dryer so a lot that can go wrong I expect. I have a 5 years warranty, it cost just short of £1000, so I hope to get good use out of it.
Woeismethischristmas · 07/02/2022 18:35

My candy one lasted less than 13 months just enough time for the warranty to expire. I couldn’t afford to pay the repair in a oner so had to pay 180 quid over a year to join their care programme. I think I’d possibly go with an warranty next time As I’ve heard good things about their no quibble replacement policy.

PeterPipersPepper · 07/02/2022 18:38

The Hotpoint engineer we saw recently said he would expect around 10 years of use from a machine but that was based on 3 washes a week.

We have a hoover dryer which is the same company as candy now. We had an supposed issue with our dryer after a few months (wasn't actually a fault in the end) but they come out with no problems at all! Turns out it got stuck in demo mode somehow and 🤦‍♀️ But fab customer service definitely.

Oh gawd! I am definitely a heavier user than that! I can't skip a day! 🤦‍♀️

I had heard nothing but bad things about beko but ours did last longer than the Samsung has! The beko didn't totally go wrong either. It was still washing clothes but had a few faults and issues. I was really excited to go the Samsung too!

I used to have a beko condenser drier too - the first dryer I owned. It took a battering here but lasted several years too! It was still drying clothes very well but it was making the most hideous noises so had to get rid. I do miss that dryer. My new one seems to take a lot longer 😅

@Userno263647284 try it after 12 month warranty is up. Customer service is much more costly then. The cost of the repair ( needed new motherboard) was just a bit less than the cost of the machine so it wasn’t beyond economic repair.

Hellosunshiner · 07/02/2022 18:44

@hilariousnamehere

I've just had my six year old one fixed and asked engineer the same thing - he said if you can get it fixed each time (best thing to try is a fixed price repair from manufacturers so you know what cost will be) there's no reason they shouldn't last 10-15 years.

But of course you might spend the equivalent of a new one on repairs in that time I guess.

Mine was about £300 new and repair was £145 - but I'd much rather keep fixing than send it to landfill. Hope you can get yours sorted, I hated being without mine for three weeks!

Not challenging the fix it rather than replace it but just wanted to point out old washing machines don't just go to landfill - the parts get stripped down and the metal is recycled and reused.
Lottieskeeper · 07/02/2022 18:46

We have a very cheap comet (how long have they been shut down?) own brand machine and it just goes on and on.
It's the only thing that's left from when we moved in together and had to equip a house on the cheap 12 years ago.
Sometimes expensive dosent last longer and sometimes cheap dosent break quickly, it's all down to luck.

iusedtohavechickens · 07/02/2022 18:51

My Miele's are still going after ten years, at times have been used upto 4 times a day everyday when all the kids were home.

campion · 07/02/2022 18:54

Do you know what the problem actually is and did you also get the 5 year parts guarantee? I vaguely remember them saying if it wasn't the direct part we could buy another machine from them. No chance!!
I definitely wouldn't recommend the machine to anyone.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 07/02/2022 18:56

I become ‘ that customer’ when appliances breakdown within a year of warranty, I hound them because it’s time they stopped in built obsolescence. I was super polite squeaky wheel when in built oven broke down 6 months after 2 year warranty finished, got a replacement oven!

I’ve just had my in warranty broken down dishwasher replaced ( they couldn’t find an electrician to fix it, then when they did he scratched his head, couldn’t find parts,). Manufacturers also need to start stocking parts

Complain loudly to managers, and managers of managers, it’s not ok for a washing machine, even one used everyday to break down after 3 years.

Also why are washing machine run times longer these days, looking for a machine that does 60 degrees in under an hour …..

EnterFunnyNameHere · 07/02/2022 19:00

I hate our economy bubble. Was all super keen on the super eco wash until I realised you were only supposed to put in about 4kg washing - half the machine capacity! How does it save energy if you have to use it twice as bloody often!

burnthur5t · 07/02/2022 19:05

depends on the level it usage I guess

1-2 times a week, 10+ years

Nutrigrainygoodness · 07/02/2022 19:11

Mine is a cheap indisit washer, it's lasted 8 years so far. It's a bit noisy but it works fine.

My mums is nearly 20. She's got a hotpoint, it was £700 top of the range when she bought it.

I think the parts are only designed to work for so many hundered or thousand washes. So if you are doing 3 washes a day, it won't last as long as if you were only doing 1 wash a day.

user1497787065 · 07/02/2022 19:22

It's about the number of wash cycles carried
Out rather than the age of the machine.

Tronkmanton · 07/02/2022 19:39

My second Samsung Eco bubble has just died, 3 years old. Samsung customer service have been utterly shocking, despite the machine still being under warranty (fortunately!). It’s taken since November to sort. They couldn’t repair it so have given me the full purchase price refund. It’s taken some getting though- I gave up with their telephone system, tried messaging on social media, then eventually had success via their online chat (they did accuse me of both overloading & under loading though Angry). Two visits by an engineer who couldn’t repair. I’m replacing it with a Haier (no I hadn’t heard of them either!) which is much cheaper and has a 10 year warranty. Fingers crossed it lasts longer than a Samsung! Interestingly they’ve discontinued the model I have and don’t do anything remotely similar….

Apparently 5 years is average. I got 8 years out of mine but 20 year old machine in our student house...l not made to last

Not good at all. They just told us to contact their third party recommended repairman or buy new...

I did find them helpful a couple years ago when they solved a simple issue over the phone though...

Thing is, I can't be without one. I know everyone is the same but one day missed already and the basket is over filling. My kids create a lot of laundry!
