How would you expect a washing machine to last?

Userno263647284 · 07/02/2022 12:00

exactly that.

My old machine, a beko lasted 6 years. It didn't completely stop working but had faults so bought a new one - a Samsung eco bubble type.

The Samsung is just over 3 years old and gone wrong, won't work at all.

Surely they are meant to last longer than this?

Keep getting told it'll probably be cheaper to buy new than fix.

they do get heavy use with two kids with sen and a busy household

It's nothing to with over loading (which I don't do anyway). It's to do with water coming in and out the machine. We've tried all relevant solutions, Dp is quite handy... it's just not working. It started with not draining water, now it's not letting water in either. Had all the filters, pumps etc out to check, checked the pipes, our water supply etc. Really bizarre!

Our Bosch one must be over 10 years old. I know an appliance engineer who recommends Bosch as they're well engineered. We went for a very basic model as we don't need many features and it means there is less to go wrong with it.

I have the same machine and had a similar issue initially with it not draining and showing the 'dE' error on the screen halfway through the wash, and then eventually refusing to let water in altogether.

I know you said you have had the filters out but mine turned out to be being caused by a child's sock wedged deep inside the filter (the one you pull out of the machine at the bottom after the flap).

Definitely more than ten years. We are at 13 and it’s still working fine touch wood . Couple of repairs (done by us, YouTube is great). It’s Bosch I think, we probably do six loads a week.

Piggyk2 · 07/02/2022 16:25

My old lasted 13 years which was a Zanussi

I now have a Samsung echo bubble too OP. What's wrong with yours? Did you not get the 5 year warranty?

I think Samsung customer service is sh*t! My seal had a slight defect... Samsung were charging £180 Shock I just paid a local washer man out and paid £100.

pastabest · 07/02/2022 16:25

Oh and ours is 6 years old and gets properly abused.

We had a 3 year warranty I believe, literally just run out a few weeks ago . We didn't take out anything else! 😪

6 years seems about normal for a £300 washer.

Piggyk2 · 07/02/2022 16:29

@Nsky

You said it’s been used lots, so surely got your money’s worth?
3 years is hardly moneys worth is it? Do you buy a new washer every 3 years Hmm
Iamanicepersonreally · 07/02/2022 16:30

I thought that Samsung machines came with a five year warranty as standard

My Samsung is 4 years old and I’ve never had a problem with it. The worst machine I ever had was an AEG, I had nothing but trouble with it

FoamBurst · 07/02/2022 16:32

3 years max.
I don't spend more than 350 so no mega fancy one.
We have 6 people in the hosie. Dh works a very dirty job where his uniform has to go thro 2 wash cycles a time at times. . Then an empty wash to clean the machine of the residue.
I'm one of them that does 3 to 4 loads a day.
So I think years is good.

I also love a new machine. As laundry always smells so much fresher when new

FoggySpecs · 07/02/2022 16:34

We seem to average one every 5 years, never buy very expensive ones, use twice a day on average, we live in a hard water area.

BammBamm · 07/02/2022 16:57

Don't get another Samsung. They tried to fob me off with a fourth repair in 11 months and I refused. Their customer service is shocking and they refused to replace even though it wasn't fit for purpose. I went round in a lot of circles before AO told me to pick another machine and I put extra money in to buy a Miele which was the best decision ever. It washes things so much better, they're less creased and no issues in 3 years. I also have a beko 10kg which isn't quite as good as the Miele but it's much better than the Samsung and a lot cheaper too Grin

StandardPoodle · 07/02/2022 17:07

We had an inexpensive machine (£199, think it was Whirlpool?) which lasted a little past its warranty date.
Now have a Miele with a 10 year warranty. It's been going strong without issue for the past 7 or more years

jytdtysrht · 07/02/2022 17:10

I have a large busy family including a dog. Recently, my washing machines last about 3.5 years (I believe that I have killed several Bosch and a Samsung)

CremeEggThief · 07/02/2022 17:13

I always get cheap machines and they last 10 years for me.

My current Hotpoint Aquarius will be 10 years old this summer. Before that, I had an awful Indesit washer-dryer that broke down at least once a year from when it was a few months old, but it wouldn't die. That lasted 10-11 years too.

My microwave was less than £30 from the supermarket and that's still going strong from 2011, as are my BHS kettle (2013) and my toaster from Asda for under a tenner (2017), so I never understand it when people say cheap products don't last.

ifonly4 · 07/02/2022 17:22

I'd be happy if it lasted 8+ years.

The first machine I bought was an Indesit, underwent two property moves and last 18 years. I'd just bought my first flat and it was the cheapest I could find on the market.

Replaced it with another Indesit, which sadly lasted four years. Went for another Indesit due to budget and hoping for another long laster - current had it six years.

My kettle, toaster etc are pretty cheap too. In fact Dp bought a £150 kettle when he was a single man cos he could afford it at the time, it broke after a year and our cheap kettle had lasted years! Sometimes it's just luck I think.

We've got the cheapest of built in ovens jn our house - was already here when we moved in just kept it as it was used minimally by previous owners, it does okay still after god knows how many years! I've wanted it to go wrong for years as I really want a new one (plus a new kitchen we can't afford!) but it just won't go wrong 😅

My grandparents have had the same microwave for about 40 years!

I'm glad it's not just me then!

I was excited when I went from my old beko to the Samsung and didn't like the beko. But this time around I am just so annoyed that it hasn't lasted long 😪

Yeah we've been out off Samsung. They have given us a code that expires in 7 days to get a new one with 25 percent off but I'd rather have a different make. We can't afford to go extortionate money. Less than £400/500 ideally. Bosch, Miele etc are likely out of Price range.

Our last one lasted 15 years but I don't think they make things how they used to unfortunately so not expecting the same from the current one.

RovenderKitt · 07/02/2022 17:52

Our Zanussi washer/dryer was over 20 years old but had to be replaced last year, hope the new Hotpoint lasts as long

EngTech · 07/02/2022 17:57

It’s called built in obsolescence I.e. Designed to last for a certain period of time, fail and to repair it is not cost effective so you buy a new one

In the old days, things were built to last but these days, cheapest parts etc means they don’t last as long 😳😳
